One of the most fundamental aspect of any growth or spiritual path is the trust in one's own perception.  There is no question it is an incomplete perception; so long as you have a body, you will not see even a minuscule fraction of the totality of the universe, or that of your Self.  But it is still your perception.  It is your link to your soul.  It is the basis for all growth, for if you rely on someone else's eyes and intuition, you are not living your own life, discovering your own Truth, but are being a guinea pig for other's experiments with Truth.  As J. Krishnamurti said,

"All authority of any kind, especially in the field of thought and understanding, is the most destructive, evil thing. Leaders destroy the followers and followers destroy the leaders. You have to be your own teacher and your own disciple. You have to question everything that man has accepted as valuable, as necessary."

Living and speaking from your own perception can be very challenging.  At the same time, it is also compassionate.  One of my teachers, the channeled entity Michael, described someone supporting by compassion as :  "This person can be counted on to tell you the truth about you in any situation.".   Being someone who speaks their perceptions fully can cause worldly problems if used indiscriminately, but within the context of close relationships generates trust and love.  When someone is being exactly who they are, Love exists.  Love is.  Living and speaking your perceptions is another way of being who you are.  Being who you are brings awareness to the Truth that you are nothing but Love.

Unfortunately, even in progressive groups, there can easily be an environment where only "positive perceptions" are shared.  This can be a definite improvement over a environment of venting and flaming at each other, but it still is not the full truth of who we are. Paradoxically, if everyone is restricted in what they can say, then over time people don't feel supported and safety issues can come up strongly.   When it's considered not compassionate to speak true perceptions then a very strange dynamic occurs and dysfunction starts.  Compassion will always start from truth.

However, simply announcing this intention this does not mean it will happen. If there is no openness to intimacy, then bare honesty may provoke strong defenses; awareness of this is compassionate in itself. It is good to ask what is necessary to create relationships, an environment, or even a deeper level of community (see previous post) where true perceptions can be displayed openly. I call this "Higher Communication". This is where the interrelationships are about sharing who you are, completely and in complete wholeness. I hope insight into these helps bring true communication in this holiday season. Each of these are needed by all parties involved in the interaction:

  1. Self awareness: Being conscious enough to know feelings and dynamics as they are happening.
  2. Expressive ability: Enough interconnection exists between the emotional and intellectual centers of the body that all of the issues involved can be communicated in words or via other forms of expression.
  3. Translation ability. This is an added level of expressive ability. As we know from NLP and other systems, people interpret and communicate their world in different ways. The ability to bridge communication distances by flexibility of words or modalities helps greatly when connecting.
  4. A dynamic of equality, where there are no power plays going on. Social positions and roles are dropped. Within a dynamic of power plays, there is a struggle to hold to a position of power, which I call a "magnetic center" and deep communication usually gets blocked in this struggle.
  5. Trust. This is an extension of equality; the relationship has developed to the point that it is unquestionably known that everyone's wellbeing is linked. You are on the same side. Your happiness is quite literally their happiness. Any power dynamic immediately removes this.
  6. Fears have been calmed. If someone is arrogant – which is the same thing as being influenced by a great fear of vulnerability – then the openness of intimacy tends to be blocked whenever the fear has not been calmed. Similarly, someone with a fear of change (e.g., stubbornness), will also tend to stonewall if they feel pressured rather than head towards true communication. Other fears act similarly. Note that all fears are nothing more than blocks in perception. And because communication is an extension of perception, fears block communication and communion.

Note that fears do not need to disappear. They simply need to be calmed. And more often than not, a gentle listening to is all that fears need in order to be calmed.

  7. Love of Self. Without a connection to an unconditional acceptance of the larger Self, which connects us to All That Is, there will be limitations on the interplay between people. You cannot communicate intricacies about something you have contempt for – you can only denigrate it, which is to say offer reasons for not looking at it. With Love of Self, all communication is tinged with it, and the depth of interaction increases exponentially. It is said that Buddha's smile conveyed such detail about the nature of the universe that this was enough for some monks to reach higher understanding.

When any of these are not present – or when there is simply no listening - then of course it's wise to let it be and not push for deeper communication.  Respect for other's choices is in itself compassionate.   Love simply allows what is, and a true compassionate acceptance of blocks without resentment opens many doors in and of itself.

Intimacy

Rules in any group or community, such as "before judging, get it from the horses mouth" that do not incorporate an understanding of the processes above can easily be used as a subtle way of saying "do not trust your own perception".  When there is a denial of perception going on, such as those of any blocks listed above, this is a subtle form of mindfuck.  I do not use that term lightly.  "Mindfuck" I would define as actions taken to cause distrust of one's own perceptions, intuitive knowingness, and connection to Self.   This is our most valued treasure – our selves.  This is why trusting one's own perception is fundamental; without this, we disown our Self.

Any time you may hear a response like "don't trust your perception, ask me" then power plays and fears are in operation.  There are no exceptions to this, and it is applicable to everyone, no matter how "wise".  Everyone's perceptions are inclusive and build on each other's; we only know a small part of ourselves, and others' perceptions add greatly to our own.   This is not saying asking others for verification isn't a good thing; it is very important to get feedback to tune perceptions or reevaluate them.  This is the benefit of positive doubt; if there is a blind trust of one's own intuition, then this can be used to wall one's self in an ivory tower.  You can trust your own perceptions while having a vast space open to expand them through others'.  With Higher Communication, there is no conflict; we are always enriched by the sharing of our selves with each other.  Within higher communication, other's perception is literally your own.  True intimacy appears (see previous post).   Oneness is experienced.

Again, trusting your own perception is an absolutely fundamental cornerstone of all growth.  You start from where you are now.

What 'scares' me is this...

As far as i know, and from my own personal experience, every single one of my senses has been tricked at some point...

Optical Illusions
Thinking I Heard something, that i did not, or mistaking someone's voice for another...
Artificial Flavors... THinking i've tasted one seasoning in a recipe, and being informed it's another...
Sense of feeling... I've thought i've felt rain drops when there were none...
And for a couple years i kept thinking i was smelling flowers... (i later decided i can sometimes smell pherimones)

I've experienced seeing my own mental mis-perceptions or 'though-illusions' fall apart...

So i have to wonder about EVERYTHING i see feel hear smell taste intuit etc...

and it reminds me of:

"Those who dream of the banquet may weep the next morning, and those who dream of weeping may go out to hunt after dawn. When we dream we do not know that we are dreaming. In our dreams we may even interpret our dreams. Only after we are awake do we know that we have dreamed. But there comes a great awakening, and then we know that life is a great dream. But the stupid think they are awake all the time and believe they know it distinctly.
"Once I, Chuang Tzu, dreamed I was a butterfly and was happy as a butterfly. I was conscious that I was quite pleased with myself, but I did not know that I was Tzu. Suddenly I awoke, and there was I, visibly Tzu. I do not know whether it was Tzu dreaming that he was a butterfly or the butterfly dreaming that he was Tzu. Between Tzu and the butterfly there must be some distinction. [But one may be the other.] This is called the transformation of things."
~ Chuang Tzu

"Fears are nothing more than blocks in perception..."

That sums up quite a bit, and I like how you said that fears only need be calmed. In a way, that illustrates the phrase, the only real fear is the fear of fear. Calm the idea of fear, and whatever was feared is no longer feared.

Thank you for you light

Much Luv

...as ussual you give that fuzzy feeling. :)

"the best advice I can give you, is not to take anyone's advice"

i heard that somewhere, and to this day, i live by those words......
no one has more perception about our feelings and needs then ourselves.

sometimes someone who loves us, sees what we already know, but don't want to accept.

Great post!

Few of the things that came to mind when reading this blog post is a confirmation of the path I am taking in my own life. I am following the 12 steps of AA and they are so transforming and necessary to reach this "higher communication" you speak of. For an insane alchaholic mind the lack of clear perception is evident. So my question to you is; if you are an insain person, should you trust your own perceptions?

For a healthy spitiual person this might apply but for an insain drunk or a junkie a radical transformation of character is an absolute prerequisite to obtain any true perception of one's self or life. Blocks, flaws of charecter or shortcomings are all the same to me. Fear and resentment once ruled my life but through the steps and trust in God as I understand him I got closer to my self, my fellow men and thus God.

Blessings to all,
Illugi

These are really good questions!

In response, I would say : YES

By this I mean ALL your perceptions. You certainly have perceptions that your impulses are not in your best interest. You have perceptions that question if what you're seeing is what's really there. So yes, trust these. And if you're going to AA, you have trust in yourself that you can transform.

Giving yourself the complete freedom to make mistakes based on faulty perception is the quickest way to learn. It is what I mean by living your own perception. Will there be mistakes? Of course. Will some feel like completely fucking up and be very painful? Of course. But it is a journey of transformation, about loving yourself *as you are*.

It sounds like you're definitely on that path. Blessings!

Thanks for this, this is really informing, this is probably what the serenity prayer is all about. Live and let live and so on.. It is really hard to let thing be like they are without wanting to control or manipulate them. We should always be growing, constantly, for me stagnation is the worst feeling I can think of. For me hell is stagnating or the end of creativity.

happy new year to all,
be creative on the new year.

Oh yes. Feeling stuck also feels worse to me than feeling in agony but in the middle of a transformation.

I too have many mistakes. Right now I'm in a journey of having a weird illness such that I can't work or do anything active, plus I got let go from my job from my own fault. But there was so much growth involved with it I am in a weird way grateful.

I enjoyed this very thoughtful post.

In my own experience, learning to let everyone have their own perceptions without judgment has been an enlightening and challenging part of my spiritual growth. Working from the idea that all perceptions are valid points of view regardless of disparity is challenging when you feel someone's perception is off-kilter.

I agree it is imperative that all perceptions are regarded as equal - where I am, another will not be and so on. I can eventually grow to understand another's perception as I grow in my spiritual awareness and likewise, another may eventually understand my perceptions. I also know this is difficult to do in practice and I still find myself casting judgment and have to back up and regroup.

Thank you for the timely reminder of trusting one's perceptions and communications with the Divine and working to allow others the same freedoms.

Yes, some perceptions can be off-kilter - for you. It really takes a jump to not look at mistakes and perceptions causing pain as "bad". They're a growing experience, a necessary part of the journey each makes to find out who they are.

This is the truth for everyone.

There was a time when I always trusted my own judgement. My mouth just spoke it and without me knowing it, I made others feel uncomfortable around me.

Learning from that, I just keep my judgements to myself. I feel it helps keep a freindship. If my opinion is asked for, then I will voice it out.

i am the oneness

I love A Course in Miracles. What it says about perception is that , alone, our perception is indeed fallible. Not because the senses don't work right, we "percieve" accurately as far as they go. But how far do they go, really. We color our interpretation of what we percieve with emotions that are often uncleared and therefore act like a cover on the lense of True perception. I personally believe what the Course states about inviting the Holy Spirit into our perception and allow Love to interpret for us. The Bible says,"I am not moved by what I see, I am not moved by what I feel, rather I am moved by the word of God." And I believe we all have the ability, dare I say the right, to hear God's take on it. When you speak of Higher Communication, it is my experience that it is done with Higher Perception, which we acquire when, yes, we calm our fears, then we have eyes that see and ears that hear, with compassion. To the post about AA earlier, the 12 steps are an excellent system for honing your Higher Perception. The focus is self-correction early on, but by step 12 you'll be communicating and connecting more authentically, having become more authentic yourself. AA, by the way, has a higher success rate than any other system for overcoming addiction out there.

I totally agree. Higher Communication and higher perception go hand in hand. In fact, you can't have one without the other, and opening to one helps the other.

A lot of this - which includes AA - is learning to love the process we're in, which involves our mistaken perceptions. When we don't love it, we look for escapes through addictions. The course also talks about that too.

hi I was wondering if Carrot Wax would allow me to put this blog on Afterlife Knowledge Conversations where I hang. we've been discussing religion and perception a bunch and I know a few people might benefit from this conversation as I have. I might steal it anyway, so better let me know before I become a thief in the night, although of course I put your name down, I don't think you would mind.

Thank you! I appreciate you sharing yourself in this way. I have to say I've recently experienced a situation which I was able to step back from and with love and compassion, be kind and gentle with myself. Your blog content has come in an appropriate time to reaffirm my truth; my perceptions and to see through this other person's experience for what it REALLY is - perceptions based of inadequacy and insecurity. This person made something out of nothing, but to be honest it was a true experience for them and for me was something that was spun from a sense of lack within.

I don't doubt my own perceptions about it, but have noticed that the "mind-fucking game" does occasionally rise up to challenge my truth. As I notice this, it's because of inner insecurities that want to be reinforced that aren't truly who I am so I don't give it power.

For now, I acknowledge the experience, this person and their experience and let it go knowing that what will be will be. I trust I cannot share some opinions with this person because it would only feed the place that would just rile them up because its not exactly who they are.

Hmm...anyhow, I'm grateful. Blessings.
