I grew up in Detroit and remember like it was yesterday when Diana Ross announced that this new young and upcoming group of brothers with an amazing young Michael fronting the group known as The Jackson 5 had just been signed to Motown.
"I Want You Back" was The Jackson Five's first smash hit single and man I loved it! The Funk Bros. of course played on this track and they sounded like they had a new found energy about them too. The band was smokin'!
There was a huge buzz about these five young brothers from Gary, Indiana. Detroit embraced them and soon so would the entire world.
Michael went on to record solo records and "Off The Wall" was one of my particular favorite Michael records. Quncy producing and the Brothers Johnson playing on many tracks. What a record man!
Ok so along comes "Thriller" in the early 80's. My ole pal Steve "Luke" Lukather played on that record and I recall Luke telling me about this new MJ record he was doing with Quincy. He told me that it was gonna be a great one! When the record was finally in stores I ran out to Tower Records to grab a copy (having the inside tip that Ed Van Halen played the solo on "Beat It".) I was so curious as to what that would sound like! Well, needless to say it was brilliant and what a move on Michael's part to get none other than Edward to play that bad ass and timeless solo!
Of course radio got a hold of "Beat It" as did MTV with the video and it blew up bigger than big! Michael was now in another league of his own. The record was an absolute masterpiece in my opinion.
They will never ever be another Michael in my lifetime. As with the passing of Elvis & Lennon I feel that same sadness and a kind of disbelief at the same time. Michael was a true innovator and trail blazer.
I will truly miss you Michael. Rest In Peace sweet prince.................
