First Draft

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your
teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed,
to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Statue of Liberty: Naaahhh.... *crumples paper*

Second Draft

"Give me those that I deem worthy, the rich or smart
as long as they speak English; The wretched refuse of your
teeming shore can pay or get out. Send these, the homeless,
tempest-tossed, back: they can get a card first to come to my country.

Statue of Liberty: THERE we go! Much better!

...

Come on, guys. Think about this new legislation in Congress. Think about the role America has played over the years, as a haven for the lost, the poor, the tired, downtrodden, and hungry of the world for two hundred and thirty years. Think about the fact that the greatest country in the world is now trying to deny people their right to a good life. And think about what you, as an American, are doing about it, whether you support it or not.

"I had always hoped that this land might become a safe and agreeable Asylum to the virtuous and persecuted part of mankind, to whatever nation they might belong..."
--George Washington, 1788

I'm sorry we let you down, Mr. President.

It just doesn't make sense. It's not right or fair. What I keep thinking is these people really don't realize what they're doing, do they? and it scares the holy hell out of me.

I'm sure Canada has a plethora of it's own problems, but it still looks better every day.

I remember going to the Statue, and seeing that poem (by a Ms. Emma Lazarus). I remember a time when that was true. Now, it seems that dream has come to an abrupt end by the cold water of Congress getting thrown in its face.

En los anos (mi computadora es un poco stupida - no puedo escribir los accentos) pasados, este frace era verdad, pero ahora - no. Urrrrgh <- el sonido de frustracion.

I'm sure that George is rolling in is grave in agony and grief of the situation.

well, as unaccostomed as i am to being an optimist, let us take heart in the fact that thanks to the protests of many americans, that bill got shut down in the senate. and remember, if the wave of social balance between good and evil does not correct itself soon (see anaya's crazy theories about human nature for further explanation) we can always have ourselves a 5th of november if it comes to it... *wink, maniacal laugh*
