Captain Anstis - EP Review

Lets face it most bands are shit! So it's refreshing to find, the dog's bollocks. I bumped into these 4 four Carlisle based headcases on Myspace. This is what the internet is about, finding great music that no one has heard yet, then spreading the word. Captian Anstis remind me of a heavier Jesus Lizard - I'm sure Steve Albini would relish recording this lot.  They brandish a unique mix: screamo vocals dueling with rock melodica. And they are doing it with the taste of a band beyond their years. The arrangements propell the songs forward so you are never waiting for a good bit. My favorite is probably "Bare Bones" - a quick snare roll then we are racing round the track in a suped up Suzuki - and it still manages to link to a catchy, drifting chorus line.  Fucking Genius! There's definatly metal influences in here but the production leaves room for everything to breathe so it feels more punk to me. The guitar sound is snakey and sharp, (I loved the Tom Morello style Whistles) the drums are relentlessly tight and pounding and all this is supported by a mid range bass vice-locked to the groove. The vocalist sounds at times on the verge of vomiting - (not in a phoney LA way) - I'm sure they must have left some sick on the studio floor.  This is manically energetic, cathartic, dense rock that I can only imagine would have you sweating in seconds at a gig. The last line from "Walk the Plank" could well be phophetic "Don't Worry We Made It" I am sure they will!
