The art debate.

So I got into a heated debate, an argument, a discussion, a flat-out skirmish about "art" and what's unique.

On one side we have Mr. M < --- not his real name, obviously, who's a firm believer and appreciator of renaissance era artwork, AKA Realism. He states that this the greatest art form, outshining all other art forms, abstract, modern, etc…..and 'anime-style' stuff.  He claims that this is the most unique. Realism is about proportions, etc., and the way he talks about it, it's more about the calculations rather than the actual art.

I am more of an anime-is style artist. More of a Tim Burton inspired Anime with a touch of fashion designer thrown in. I believe in unique-ness and individuality when it comes to art. So what if the proportions aren't exact, and so what if the shading isn't precise.

Art isn't supposed to be about "Calculations", it's supposed to be about creativity, self expression. He essentially stated, not in words, but this is the impression I got, that my art isn't unique, that another can reproduce it, and it's essentially crap compared to, say The Creation of Adam  ( a piece of art done by Leonardo Da Vinci)

I am not saying I don't appreciate "realistic" art, I do. I can understand the effort that goes into it, and the skill, but saying it "outshines" the other work?

Not exactly. I don't think so. I can look at a Tim Burton creation, say like the Corpse Bride movie, and go wow, that's fucking brilliant, and immensely beautiful. -.-   and then look at a  painting from the 1660's, and go ..Wow…That's mastery.

There are many forms of art, and they should all be recognized as something great. No matter if you don't like the subject manner.

I don't have skill at doing realism, so I am not an artist? Really, you don't say?! That's rude. I don't attempt to be "unique", I just am. I am sorry if I draw anime-ish style and every teenager happens to be like that.

Most bring a different angle to it.

Furthermore, This "Mr. M", doesn't even draw most of the time.  Which, essentially, means he's not an artist and what does a kid who doesn't even draw even have the right to criticize something? One shouldn't sit there and talk as if they know something when they can't even do it.

I totally agree with you on this one. Every piece of art takes time and patience to make it beautiful, I guess you just have to have an eye for it. you may look at an abstract piece, and not get it, but that doesn't mean that it's worthless.

Though i have to say, there are a lot of people out there who criticize work, but can't do it themselves. In my line of work, I've seen/heard of a couple restaurant critics who've never worked a day of their life in a kitchen. I doubt they can make anything better than mac n cheese, but they make 6 digits, telling us that we can't make our food right. -shrugs-

Simon Cowell does the same thing...Which is odd, I DO love his insults, but really, his judgement really isn't needed. x_x

Good blog. And I totally agree. There is a place for every style. Go to any major art museum. Every wing will have people admiring works in every artform there is.

Sounds like Mr. M just wants to make himself look better...

He does that with everything, from Anatomy to Global Studies. My art teacher stated simply he was talking right out of his ass.

Who is this Mr. M person? Sounds like a hypocrit. He goes on and on about art, yet he doesn't draw. How the fuck does he know anything about scale, perspective, porportion, creativity and art expresson. I've seen masterpieces that didn't even contain a person, that were futuristic landscapes and by the looks, it seemed like it might have taken the artist months and months to do. And all made up in their head. So, am I suppose to say that sucks, because it's not "real". I love all types of artwork, because they all have meaning, and just because I prefer comic book, anime, and american comic styles, doesn't mean that I think they are better than any other style. I say you challenge him, to draw something so we can see what a piece of shit it is and make fun of it. And then you can tell him how the porportions are clearly wrong and how the anatomy doesn't add up. So who is he, so I can tell him off for you? He doesn't know shit about cock!

I know right? I have seen him draw one thing, a hand, and it was "okay" hardly anything to be proud of. XD

Michael Raskitt, a junior at my school....x.X Not sure if he has a myspace. I think he went off about that too.

There are many many different forms of art and I appreciate them all. Besides...you SOLD one of your pieces at the school art show! Can he say the same?

tachers like him make me glad i'm not in school anymore.

your right, although we do share some similar styles in art, i agree taht everyone hasa different perspective. You can be a fan of something but it's considerd rude-natured to criticise other ppl's work.

like t work when random customers stop and tell me how to do my job <.<
"excuse me but do i come at YOUR job and tell you how to do yours?" , like your teacher, who dosen't even draw and claims to know about art. why don't you try telling him how to teach? XD ha!

a good quote i remember: "art is art, therefore it isint neccessary to know everything about it" /screw calculations! XP

yes you are an artist being a fan of your drawing and modeling alike. Take the word from someone you know draws anime-ish as well.
