There has been some friction recently between regular users of eQSO and some HAM operators. It would seem that SOME of the hams are coming onto the system and insisting on using ham jargon, Q codes, ham callsigns etc. This is causing the regular users of the system to become generally hostile towards ALL hams, though it really is only a handful who are insisting on talking ham. The eQSO system we are using is designed for unlicenced operators, PC operators, and RF gateways on unlicenced and/or free radio systems (PMR, CB, UHF CB etc), ham operators have their own eQSO software and system and if they wish to converse in ham-speak then they really should use that system. Hams are of course welcome on the eQSO for PMR/CB program, just without the technical jargon, phonetic callsigns, etc. Remember, most of us on the free eQSO system are just Joe Public with little or no radio experience, many users are not even on a radio and may never have used one before, only connecting via a PC!

The worst offence however comes mainly from the newly licenced hams who are taking their newly licenced status far too seriously. Talking down to the rest of us just because they passed a test that shows they know how to wire a plug and add up resistors is not going to give them an easy ride on eQSO, and there are a few of us regulars on the system who won't hold back should they start trying to do so!

So please play fair, we as unlicenced users of eQSO are not allowed on ham frequencies and programs as we are not deemed clever/suitable/experienced enough, so hams really should not be allowed on free eQSO. However, as we are always willing to welcome those who will respect the wishes of the majority, anyone who just wants to come and ragchew with the rest of us will always be welcome, be it CBer, ham or otherwise.

On a final note, and as a precautionary warning to hams who wish to use free eQSO, giving out your callsign is probably a BAD IDEA! Remember, free eQSO is transmitted on UK CB, CEPT CB, UHF CB, PMR446 etc, and as far as Im aware the licence terms for hams DO NOT permit the use of these bands for ham comms, just like I can't use my eQSO callsign on your licenced bands. Wouldn't want you to get a warning from OFCOM etc for breach of your licence, eh?!

*PS just for the record I have my ticket too, just cant be bothered using it as the bands are dead, the DX is crap and I really dont want to spend all that £££ on kit just to talk about antennas and capacitors with someone I can email or VOIP. I've heard more activity on the old 934mhz band than the whole 2M band this summer! Plus a lot of the assholes from CB are now M3/M6 holders who have brought their gutter talk and low-brow conversation topics to the frequencies, proof if any that the current ham test is woefully inadequate and policing of the bands has all but dissapeared. Sad but true!
