A new plan was introduced to the citizens of Eureka concerning expansion of the Humboldt Bay Harbor. The plan is to develop the port so it can be accessible to local barges, project cargo, bulk cargo shipments, and cruise ships. The extra cargo would require re-opening 300 miles of railroad tracks between Samoa and the Humboldt Bay. This plan is unfeasible and exceedingly detrimental to the environment. Railways in the Eel River Canyon and Russian River Canyon were constantly victim to repeated closures, toxic spills, and derailments. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad was the first and only railway to be officially closed due to these continuous problems. To reopen this railway would put human and animal life at risk. The funding for this project will be provided by Goldman Sachs, who will also gain all the profit. Goldman Sachs has a past of running businesses into the ground for profit, remarkably similar to MAXXAM's management of Pacific Lumber. An example of this is shown through Goldman Sachs' financial advising of the company Montana Power and Light. After recommending that the company divide their assets, Montana Power and Light went bankrupt. Because Goldman Sachs held stakes in the company, them and their investors profited from the company's collapse. Small cities and companies mean nothing to Goldman Sachs because they are the largest investment bank in the world with active influence in the U.S. Treasury. Their only focus is money, so with former members and CEOs in the Federal Government, they can gain net by any means. Goldman Sachs doesn't care about the Humboldt Bay. An Environmental Impact Report has not yet been filed, yet Goldman Sachs is ready to charge ahead. They don't care that hundreds of species will go extinct from the dredging of the bay. They don't care about the watercourses that will be ruined by the erosion of railroad construction. They don't care about the added pollution from not only cargo ships, but also cruise lines that dump over 100 gallons of hazardous or toxic waste and 210,000 gallons of sewage (most of which is untreated). Someone has to care about the land and the animals who are dependent upon it. Earth First! cares, and we know you do too. Lets stop this plan before it has a chance to get off the ground. -Juniper Berry
