Since both of my sisters had a childhood cancer the support system around Children's Hospital provided them with the resources they needed. I have come to notice, now that I am an "adult", the community does not have as many resources and the resources they do have you have to find on your own; it is stressful enough to deal with this disease without having to tie up all the loose ends you don't have time to think about. I decided that I would like to open a cancer resource center in Bremerton (Goheen Cancer Center) where patients of all ages can come as a place to rest and relax and find information regarding treatment options, financial support, and feel comfortable knowing there is a place to go for help and support. In the center, I would like to have a small library of books ranging from informational books about the disease and treatment options to inspirational books like Nordie's At Noon. I would also like to have a room for support groups to meet; a comfortable environment where people can get together to talk and learn through each others experiences. Each person that comes through the center will be given individualized attention and help. On top of being a supportive place where cancer patients and their families can come we will also provide services to help them through this difficult time. Children with cancer will be given small gift bags including a stuffed animal, a coloring book, crayons, and a book. Adults with cancer will be able to choose a blanket to bring with them to their chemotherapy visits and hospital stays. When possible, volunteers will be available to bring patients to their doctor appointments when friends and family are not able to accompany them.
