In talking with some band members I realize that many of you do not understand that Internet Broadcasters (webcasters) have to, by law, pay royalties to play your music.   Labeled or not.

On December 24, 2002, the Copyright Office published in the Federal Register an agreement negotiated between Sound Exchange and Voice of Webcasters, which sets rates and terms for the reproduction and performance of sound recordings by webcasters.

It was decided that Internet radio does NOT have the same promotional value to the copyright holders that terrestrial broadcast radio has and should not be treated in the same manner.  The RIAA argued that Internet radio involves consumers receiving a "perfect digital copy" of the music that negatively impacts record sales.

So therefore, we have to pay to play~

Tundra Trash Radio offers listeners exposure to cool music they might otherwise never hear. I know CDs have been bought by listeners who have said "I never would've heard that band if it wasn't for your radio station!". Yeah, and we're taking money out of the RIAA's hands how?!?

But that's neither here nor there.

What is done is done and it has been for some time now.
When this ruling passed, webcasters had to go back and pay royalties for the previous 3 years of broadcasting.
And:  I've been doing this over 5 years now~
 Webcasting Determination

My point, you ask??

Well, you need to collect the money that I or any other webcasters pays to play your music!!!   We pay it to Soundexchange and on a per performance/per listener basis.  (This is where we have to, by law, pay for independent music).   If labeled, we pay ASCAP and BMI fees as well, but I'm talking independent artists here~
Which is 99.9 percent of what I play.

If you are not signed up at Soundexchange..you will NOT be able to collect the money due to you!!  Or the money I am paying to play your music!!

I encourage all bands to be signed up there!!
You may have money coming that you had no idea was there for you!   Last year, Soundexchange claimed they couldn't find many of the bands, agents, or whatever and that money went unclaimed and into the RIAA's pocket.
(Not sure why they couldn't find the bands~nobody asked me about mine, and I sure as hell could have told them where to find the bands I play!!)

I just want bands to get what's due them~
So, please sign up, and collect your money!!!
Soundexchange

Thanks,
Beth

Well then, If you play my stuff, then I advertise your station.  Fair is fair.  Most indy artist know it's about music not money.  Aw to heck with it.  I'm adding a link to you on my main page anyway.  I never did like the red tape anyway.

The Mabrey Bros. Band

On behalf of musicians everywhere thanks for that info. Not everybody knows about that sort of thing. If you play in a cover band the clubs you play at pay royalties so a lot of bands never bump up against the RIAA or ASCAP or BMI personally, and commercial radio won't tell you that kind of stuff.  The industry has been sucking artists dry for decades and should have to pay when they collect. And I guarantee you that ASCAP and BMI wont let fees go uncollected. I have seen what they do to clubs that are late with payments.
