Belfast says a mighty hallelujah for Cohen
Belfast Telegraph
Monday, 27 July 2009
By Shane Donaghey

George Michael turned it into a disco, Kylie into a party, Bruce into the best night in a bar ever.

Last night Leonard Cohen and his Unified Heart Touring Company turned the soulless barn of Belfast's Odyssey into the best cafe in Europe, one of those all-night bars in Paris known to the few.

Of course, when you get a standing ovation before you've a note growled out then you’re among friends.

Those who don't get Cohen miss a treat. Yes there are the songs of loss and loneliness, but leavened with a wit drier than a drought in the Sahara.

And songs of love among the greatest ever written.

Kicking off to Dance Me To the End of Love a near-full house of mainly middle-aged reliving the bedsit years moved with every note. And clung on to every word. It was almost a revivalist meeting and not just because he spent a lot of time kneeling on the carpet.

With a perfect band a special mention must go to the backing trio of Cohen collaborator and lover Sharon Robinson and sisters Patti and Charley Webb.

And how could you not love a man who writes, "I fought against the bottle, but I had to do it drunk."

Hallelujah won a deserving standing ovation and a place in hell for Simon Cowell, while you haven’t lived until you've seen a 74-year-old man seduce every woman in the audience during I'm Your Man.

It's a bad world out there. Cohen provides a soundtrack to understand it. Genius.

Dear Leonard, I don't understand how all these other people have gotten to know you and are on a first-name basis, and I envy them, but please know in your heart that there is a 55-yr-old fading redhead standing in the back (virtually, you understand) ecstatic at hearing you in person.  My first introduction to your music was a copy of your songs sung in Norwegian!!  I happen to _be_ norsk, so I could understand all the lyrics....and fell in love with your music that way.  Then, to hear _YOU_ singing your own songs!   Ah, "............were paradise enow."

Magnificent!

You are 'electric' now,
The 'charge' is being felt...World-Wide.
(Why now? You ask.)
The 'time' had to be right,
For such a great 'delight'.
Now the curtain has risen, the stage is lit,
Leonard and his band are singing, and it's a perfect fit.

Excellent.
God i wish i went to see you perform when you were in Australia. I missed 'both' Melbourne dates! (Please, please, please try and come back!!!!!!!!!!!! Please?)
On a more personal note your songs really speak to me, your songs of wanting/needing/having/losing heavenly/bittersweet love really touch me. Someone i am very close to turned me onto your music. She went to see you in Adelaide and she sent me a text message saying "leonard cohen is the sexiest 75 year old ever" :-D. I feel so much for her romantically speaking, she knows and we've been semi-romantic with each other but it's just not possible to be together (only at the moment i hope). Your songs simultaniously (especially 'I'm Your Man', i would kill to hear that song live) make me think of her and make me feel like i am not alone in my desires and deepest longings. Bless you kind sir :-D

..27 of July was the commemoration's day of the exclusion of Spinoza of his jewish community.......Thanks L*C to be kneeling on the carpet in this day....Niezsche was recognizing this man as his brother..;-)....Hallelujah is for me the song L*C gave to Jeff Buckley, and Rimbaud should be in love with this song because of "Elle est retrouvée....Quoi ? L'éternité ! ....C'est la mer allée avec le soleil"......
