A note from the director ...
With six great years under our gun belts, Barbara and I are proud to be able to continue the traditions started at Freedom Farm back in 2002! The 2009 Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase is scheduled for July 23-26, 2009 at the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio. Once again, the best in western arts instruction and entertainment will be gathered at the birthplace of one of the greatest Wild West performers in history.
Our continued partnership with the Garst Museum and Annie Oakley Center means that we can offer some great things this year! Our free public showcase held on the museum grounds was so popular last year, we are expecting double the turnout in 2009 and we would like you to be a part of that!
Ohio is home to some great talent and they all come together to make this event possible. Kirk Bass will be returning with the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame championship events. Lariat Artist Doug Smith will be spinning his way through some great workshops and performances as well as new and challenging contests.
New for 2009 is the Society of American Whip Artistry (SAWA) National Whip Arts Challenge. People have written me several times this year about expanding the whip contests so that's what we're doing. Along with speed and accuracy, we're going to give our whip artists some real challenges. This past year has seen some great publicity for the whip and this is the chance for those potential stars to come out and show their stuff! Precision contests will be added this year including the 'Poker Challenge' - a playing card targeting contest that tests the hand-eye coordination. We've seen Vince Bruce do his famous card cut from his own hand. Can you hit a card out of the air as someone else throws it? Come find out!
Kirk Bass and Doug Smith are back to manage the knife throwing and roping events, respectively. We'll have some great entertainment, new events, and new surprises! Plus, the family package available during pre-..registration makes it worth the trip! This really is the only event of the 2009 season! If you miss our WWAC events, don't MISS this one! (Note: Due to a performance commitment, Lariat artist Doug Smith will be on hand THURSDAY ONLY - so get here early!)
We hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Gery & Barbara Deer GLD Enterprises & Productions

WESTERN ARTS IN OHIO AND AROUND THE COUNTRY
Western arts performers played a major role in the development of American entertainment through the early 1950's. Today, the skills and entertainment value of these performers is relegated to the rodeo arena or the sideshow. The Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase has provided a venue in Annie's home town of Greenville where western arts performers and hobbyists can come to hone their skills, compete in contests, and share their love of the western arts with friends and colleagues.
GLD Enterprises & Productions is a promoter and support of Western Arena Arts such as whip artistry, lariat artistry, and much more. Our company donates time, resources, and staff to produce and operate the Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase in Greenville, Ohio.
Many free workshops and other events are scheduled throughout the year. Bookmark this page and also visit www...thewhipstudio...com for whip artistry classes and special workshop information.
Many western arts performers assist stage and film productions to act as stunt performers, stand-ins, and western arts coaches. In May 2006, Ohio western artists Doug Smith and Gery L. Deer served as western arts coaches for the Wright State University production of "Annie Get Your Gun." Smith and Deer helped the cast learn roping and gun spinning for the production which was the highlight of the university's theater season.
The Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase is now an integral part of the Annie Oakley Days festival. The AOWAS was the first to present it's entire program before a public audience .... the first to combine a western arts gathering with a hometown celebration of a Wild West Performing Artists' life and career ... and many more!
