Primal Jelly Social Club @ The Button Factory
I always fear for a band that has to follow
NWS but Howl do it almost seamlessly. This is my first time to see them
and I'm amazed at the standard of musicianship. The band is fronted by
Sarah Red and she's perched on a small stool playing acoustic guitar.
It's a pleasure to see a band that is fronted by a talented female
instead of some wannabe indie rocker in his Da's jacket and his Ma's
Peter Mark haircut. Her ethereal sound is beefed up with Ciaran
Redmond on lead guitar, Mark Flynn on bass and Andy Sutton on drums.
Their music, like all good music, is hard to define. It sweeps from
smoky blues to anthemic chamber pop and back home to a purple and red
tinted after-hours jazz club. The songs are longer than normal –
meandering on for 6 or 7 minutes - but some well placed breakdowns and
build-ups keep them interesting like some musical Bayeaux tapestry. I
just wish I'd smoked some Salvia before they started their set. During
one of the songs Sarah Red lays her acoustic aside and unleashes an
incredible vocal stream of lyrics and ad libs. It's an impressive
performance by any standards -perfect music for a King's throne room.
Make a point of checking out Howl.
