[VIA: MOTIF MAGAZINE:] Danger Danger Birds & The Viennagram @ Firehouse 13, Thursday, February 14th.
The Danger Danger Birds jumpstarted the return of burlesque to Providence with their debut on Halloween in a shroud of mystery by raising the ghosts of what was a largely forgotten era in 2005. I won't overstate it and call it a burlesque revolution but if you like scantily attired ladies strutting around the room, you have to give the Birds credit for starting the fire for there are now a several burlesque troupes shimmying in these parts. Appropriately, the Valentine's Day performance will be a thematic "multimedia celebration of love." Lead Bird, Keri King, described their plans for the night as "dynamic but intimate with a series sketches set to jazz and lounge numbers from the 1920s-50s."
Love will never be retro and with a theme of classical romance on tap, King promises a performance that she believes will "be engaging and full of the surprises" mixing in elements of slapstick that have become the Bird's calling card. King describes The Birds metamorphosis from her initial vision into a collaborative operation as very organic. She feels lucky to have had the privilege to work with several amazing choreographers as well as talented women from all different backgrounds of dance and theatre who compose The Birds. "I'm not the driving force which is good because I never wanted to be up there leading a chorus line.
"We really feed off one another creative energy" Last year I named the Viennagram one of the 5 bands to watch in 2007 to which the band responded by posting as being named as one of the best bands in Providence, playing one show, and breaking up. Further proof that I know what I'm talking about. Haters dwell on the breakup but lovers focus on the reunion. That's the fact Jack as we march over a road of frozen bones in this global warming hoax. Those lovable Tom Waits loving gangsters are back with armbands in full force. Singer/drummer A.V. Vienna reminds me of V from the book/movie V For Vendetta because he is subversive, weird, and rock 'n' roll. He describes the band as "the last next best thing. "Aurally, we are the greatest in post-modern pop music, conceptually, a true example from the theater of life campaign." For the record, I'm sticking with modest boys with armbands.
As for the Valentine's Day performance a partial list of what A. V. promises includes "Candy! "Legs! "Legs! "Legs! "Dance party a go go! "Did someone say marriage-fight-sing-a-long? "(John Wilkes) kissing booth!"
Admission is $10 with a $15 couples discount - other discounts are available by befriending the Danger Danger Birds and The Viennagram.

BY MARC CLARKIN -------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT MR. CLARKIN'S EDITORS DIDN'T WANT YOU TO READ: The Viennagram always struck me as mix of a theatrical concept as a good rock 'n' roll band. How would you describe the band?
