Faro chapter 1 review
The story of Faro begins in Manhattan in the future. Faro, the hero, is the last of his kind. A tyrannous empire rules this future humanity. Faro and his people oppose the empire. The professor, Faro’s father, sends Faro into the past, using the aid of a time machine. This is done to prevent the dreaded future from becoming a reality.
In the past a mysterious hooded figure appears. Unveiled, it is a beautiful blond haired woman, bearing a chain of smoking skulls, and a glowing cross. Her name is Majesty. She is a Demon Goddess. She finds, a now adult Faro, piloting an air ship. Using her magic Majesty makes the ship crash in flames into the ocean. Faro is not dead, but awakens in a luxurious bed in an opulent chamber. Majesty greets him and informs Faro, she has rescued him after his ship crashed. Majesty then orders Faro to appear downstairs, after he is cleaned up. Faro complies and upon heading downstairs, sees that it is a great hall filled with many chairs and tables full of people. There is a stage live music. Scantily clad women wander the hall, drawing the eyes of admiring men, to their supple forms. Majesty has arranged a dinner table in this brothel, and introduces Faro to her dinner guests, a senator, a sheik, and two mysterious actors. The occupants of the table are arguing now. It is revealed the time and place they are in is civil war America. The argument at the table heats up, guns are drawn between Faro and one of the actors. No shots are fired, but it seems this won’t be the last time we see the actor, with that gun of his.
A montage of images reveals that Faro is in the service of Majesty now, as her personal assassin and her lover. The assassinations, give Faro nightmares. He is haunted by his service to Majesty. Faro, then has an inner monologue about the state of the country and how it’s falling apart due to Lincoln being elected president. Faro contemplates how the occupants of Majesty’s brothel conspire to benefit from the oncoming war.
Dissatisfied with the way things are going. Faro informs Majesty that he is leaving. The war is coming and he needs to find his ship to prepare for the oncoming conflict. Upon diving in the ocean in search for his ship, Faro realizes he has the uncanny ability to breathe under water. He finds his ship and sets out to fix it.
A new figure enters the scene.
Muzio the Mauler appears and starts causing trouble at the brothel. Faro reappears in the nick of time. Muzio the Mauler and Faro, engage in a fierce battle with each other. Fists fly, and the fight leads to an explosion. It appears that this is finally the end for our hero, but like a phoenix rising from the ashes Faro returns from the flames a bloody mess to reek havoc once more.
All in all, Faro issue number 1, is a compelling time travel tale. That adds a touch of the supernatural and high adventure to an all around good story. I highly recommend it, for your reading enjoyment.
