The debut record from local delinquents CPC Gangbangs, Mutilation Nation, is pure rock 'n' roll fury, sure to turn the punk-rock puritans on their ears. The band sidesteps the stubbed-toe angst of the current punk parade and the political tub-thumping of the Bush-whackers with Marshall stacks, while never losing the plot by straying too far from their rock 'n' roll roots.
The usual suspects, proto-punk explorers like MC5, Stooges and Rocket From the Tombs, get the nod on songs like "Gone Black" and "Coke Blues," but CPC Gangbangs bring a new sense of heaviosity that tips the scales with Hawkwind-styled oscillations, obscure psychedelic references and even a nod to Goth gods Sister of Mercy on the unlikely album opener, "Jeff Starship."

Dirty, raunchy, utterly irreverent garage rock is the meat and potatoes of Montreal four-piece CPC Gangbangs. Former members of such storied bands as the Spaceshits, the Daylight Lovers and the Sexareenos converge to wreak havoc on your central nervous system. As campy and cocky as they are punky and plain old hyper, the boys hinge their business on a solid foundation of rock 'n' roll, which keeps the zaniness in check. This full-length debut holds up, through and through. The blues meets punk, '60s pop and '70s psych in the mosh pit, and a party breaks out. Rating 4

Un autre groupe d'ici qui a compris ce qu'est l'urgence du rock'n'roll.
Une pièce sombre et psychédélique ouvre l'album, mais dès la seconde on comprend que ces gars-là carburent à l'adrénaline.
Si leur rock garage semble vouloir déraper à tout moment, les musiciens maîtrisent suffisamment l'engin pour garder le cap.
Car ce regroupement d'anciens Sexareenos, Spaceshits et Daylight Lovers a de l'expérience et ça s'entend: ils savent donner différentes saveurs à une musique qui peut sembler monocorde.
Sans avoir la précision de Le Nombre ou des Breastfeeders, ils partagent leur intensité et méritent leur place sur cette scène.

Finally we witness the sheer audio intensity of the last great Montreal hope for rock and/or roll, the livewire four-piece ably capturing their concert mayhem on a full-length record for the first time. Jeff Starship kicks things off slow and psychedelic, while the follow-ups Teenage Crimewave and One More Girl are topical and musical shots of the old, grainy and gritty soul spunk sung through a tin can. Mutilation Nation deftly shows off the twin songwriting genies Choyce and The Mayor of Canada, contrasting each other oh so right in all the wrong ways, keeping us guessing and grooving till the end.

C'est quoi?
Mutilation Nation, le plus récent album de CPC Gangbangs, nous fait voyager plus près de Détroit que de Montréal. Après une première pièce qui fait presque office de messe noire présidée par un Iggy zombie, on retrouve la verve des Stooges et MC5 avec Teenage Crimewave.
Ça sonne comme une nation qui se mutile?
On carbure plus à l'énergie qu'à la mutilation à l'écoute de cet album. La production est sale, l'exécution dans le tapis et le plaisir toujours présent. Frères de sang des Jon Spencer et Guitar Wolf de ce monde, CPC Gangbangs é(in)voquent l'esprit même du rock'n'roll.
Donc, ayoye?
Oui, l'album est un coup de poing. En fait, comme c'est Howard Bilerman qui a enregistré le disque à l'Hotel2tango, on entend tout de suite qu'il a compris et vu le groupe sur scène. C'est comme si on était au concert...
