Current mood:  sad
On July 8th, 2009 the world lost one of its greatest singer/songwriters.
Founding member and original Crimson Glory frontman Midnight (John Patrick McDonald, Jr.) passed away peacefully, (in true Midnight form on an eerily cloudy, full moon-lit night) at 3:30am with his family by his side. He was 47 years old.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 11th at 6:30pm at Siesta Key public beach (just south of main pavillion).
This celebration of Midnight's life will be open to all who wish to attend.

The band has released the following statements:

"Midnight was a very special soul with a beautiful heart...

To try to describe his many gifts through the limiting restraints of text and typeset is like trying to describe a thousand rainbows to a blind man who never learned to count.
His mind was both extraordinarily beautiful and enticingly frightening, an indescribably mysterious place from which came some of the most brilliantly creative and soulfully poignant lyrics in the history of heavy metal. He was not always understood, but his talents were undeniable and transcended far beyond the bounds of our weaker imaginations.

As is the case with all truly great artists, Midnight was hounded by his demons...but he put them to work, using them to pull back the curtains of his cosmic wonderland and reveal the pieces and parts that made him who he was: the soft vulnerable child, the eccentric and maniacal genius, the soaring passionate believer, the charming and mischievous imp, the wistful dream weaver...discovering Midnight was like discovering a new reality for us; we knew from the moment we first heard him sing that he was something special, and we all feel honored that he shared himself not just with us, but with the rest of the world.

Midnight's voice was truly unique; he had such an emotional, magical, mystical quality that most singers never have or come close to achieving. That voice took all who heard it through highs and lows, through triumph and suffering; every word, every note touching, reaching deep inside and commanding response and feeling. He was a great influence for metal singers and will continue to be for many years to come.

Despite his personal demons we always loved him and hoped that one day he would get well. We will miss him dearly. He was one of us...our friend, our brother. Midnight was and will always be the singer for Crimson Glory. He is at peace now; he will always live in our hearts...he is forever."

JON DRENNING:
"Midnight and I shared so much together over the years; dreams, goals, visions, creativity... We  would often daydream for hours upon hours about how we would make the most amazing music together that would "Transcend" the world. We were determined to make an impact like no other and wanted create a legacy that would be everlasting... Despite our disagreements, I loved him deeply and will miss him profoundly. We had a contentious, yin-yang type of relationship, but we respected each other's ideas, talents and creativity, and loved each other dearly; we were brothers 'til the end. Midnight was a kind, generous, spiritual, beautiful, passionate, eccentric, mysterious, stubborn old soul with the voice of both an angel and a lion. Truly, he was a rare individual with an enigmatic, angelic vioice who had a great influence on many of today's well-known and yet-to-be-known metal singers. There have been many great singers throughout the years in the metal genre, including several who have tried to copy Midnight's uniquely moving, intensely emotional style, but there can be - and will only ever be - one Midnight. He was a once-in-a-lifetime singer, one-in-a-billion, a star among stars... Indeed, the world has lost a great singer, songwriter, painter, poet and friend... but his spirit lives on in each of us who knew and heard him, as well as for those yet to discover his creative genius. In death you live again, my Brother, my friend. It does not mean the end; it never really ends..."

BEN JACKSON:
"Words cannot express the sadness I feel today over the loss of my dear friend Midnight. Having been friends with Mid for the last thirty years has provided me with memories I will surely treasure for the rest of my life until we hopefully will meet again. Together we made music, shared laughs and good times, traveled the world to faraway places and lived life with passion.
He touched many with his unique gift and was universally loved by his many friends and fans. A gentle genius and a sweet, sweet soul. I will miss you so much buddy! I love you!"

DANA BURNELL:
"Today the world lost an incredible singer and songwriter. I lost my band mate, my friend... my brother. I've known Midnight for over 30 years; he was the gentlest, kindest and most caring person I've known, and I loved him very much. Midnight only wanted good for everyone, he was a good soul. Knowing he is at peace now brings me great peace. I love him and will forever miss him."

JEFF LORDS:
"Speaking in the wake of my friends and bandmates, I can say that they've covered, very eloquently, a lot of what needed to be said. Notwithstanding, I will offer my thoughts, because every relationship is truly unique:

What few people know, probably even some of my own bandmates, is that I knew John "Midnight" McDonald longer than most---from the seventh grade, to be precise. We sat next to each other in History class. Mind you, this was well before I ever picked up a bass or knew that he could belt out the 'Zepplin and 'Floyd tunes. Well, Midnight("John", then) would sleep or doodle during class. We sat next to each other in the back. Come test time, he'd want to copy my answers (that rascal!). In any event, I knew that he was a rare breed with a tendency toward the arts. Little did I know....

Fast forward 7 or 8 years, and one night at our rehearsal facility we were going to try out this guy whom we discovered on the beach playing acoustic guitar. Admittedly, I was skeptical when this shoe-less and frumpy-clothed fellow showed up to give a whirl at singing Priest, Accept, Maiden, Scorpions...all of which were bands we covered very briefly before "Crimson Glory" was born. I was once told, "you cannot tell how far a frog can jump by lookin' at it". Well, that night, and the following nights, that little adage was never so solidified in mind. The kid had a set of pipes. We later learned that he had a knack for writing creative and thought-provoking lyrics, as well. Crimson Glory was born.....

Fast forward again, and we found ourselves going from a warehouse - to the studio - to stages over seas. With the increasing amount of pressure to sing the songs as you hear those recordings today, Midnight sought to overcome this pressure by unnatural means, which would later, and sadly, become his downfall, as well as the band's. This problem put a tremendous strain on the relationships with people close to him, meaning, not the fans in this case, but with his family and bandmates (who were his second family). To my understanding, we all did what we could to help him.

In the end, I am sad: Sad, because of the loss of life and that such a talented human being never reached his full potential. I am angry: I am angry because he was out of touch with reality towards the end, and could not be reasoned with, even if that meant trying to reconcile some past mistakes made along the way, including my own. I am hopeful: I am hopeful because, while I don't believe in a hereafter, I firmly believe that John "Midnight" McDonald has touched people in this life, the life that we know for certain exists, and in that sense, he was most certainly an Earthly "Angel". Farewell, Mid'.

Thank you to the CG fans around the world.

Peace and Mirth, Jeff Lords."

It does not mean the end

Crimson Glory @ Animal House in Sarasota, Fl a very long time ago. Tod Slakans, Ben Jackson, Dana Burnell, Me (Tina Slakans), Midnight, and Jeff Lords. RIP Midnight!  We will all miss you!  Wish I could be there for the funeral, but I live in Arizona now.  I'll will be thinking of you all.  I've been listening to Crimson Glory all evening.  The remake song "Angel" that I believe will be played at the funeral, just makes me tear.

Midnight we will miss you, but, this kind of men never really die. The legacy that he left us is so great cause the quality of his vocals is unreachable even after so many years and will be never be reached actually by any other band or other singer. Midnight sang and lived on the edge. That's for sure.

the first time i heard crimson glory,my friend had the cassette,we were driving in my '73 datsun 610,it was '86,i remember telling him i never heard of this band & don't play it cause it probably sucks!.I remember hearing the first song, that progressive/rock sound and then i heard that "Voice" i was hooked.I also remember at that time geoff tate(Queensreich)was a big deal then,he had the voice,we kept listening to the tape as we drove & then "Azrael" came on,it was the first time i ever heard it,i was blown away by this band. When "Lost reflection" came on i knew i would be a fan of this band for the rest of my life, thank you john, for sharing your "Voice" with the world, though you are no longer with us & i never got to meet you, your music will live on forever for other generations to come, you will NEVER be truly gone.My niece loves crimson glory, she is 13yrs old.I was taking her for ice cream & i was playing "Transcendence" & she was like "Play that song again i like it".....godspeed john!!

Midnight- RIP Angel~4-29-62 to 7-8-09

I have had the privilege and honor to share in Midnight's life for the last 4 months on this planet and without a doubt...this prophetic Man was surely an angel sent from above to raise our awareness of the meaning of life itself...He brought forth more love to those He touched in such amazing ways that are near indescribable for uttered words.....so I will not pretend to do so...but would like to state that during the course of His last 4 months...He was extremely happy and at peace..He enjoyed playing and singing music everyday...He even learned to dance around the house...He learned to love food again (steak and shrimp and don't forget the sauces)...His enthusiasm for painting excelled and with it came forth some of the most unorthodox paintings ever put to canvas. He relished in board games...mostly scrabble because He mastered and loved the expression of language itself and chess......His unwordly ways and messages via lyrics to his songs are left behind for those of us that are seeking truth and understading in times of dismay...He believed whole heartedly in the Surpreme Being~God~ and loved life more than anyone I have ever met....He is now in His Father's hands and His soul and spirit lives on forever........One of His favorite sayings "Come play with me"......and indeed will will Midnight...until we meet again my sweet precious loving soul...may you always rest in peace..."We will never die, we just change forms"  ....love always.....dar

Over here in the UK Midnight and CG are still seen as pioneers of the progressive/power metal scene, as a kid I bought the first album on import just on hearing half a song on what was then the BBC Radio 1 Friday Rock Show with the late Tommy Vance, then the Dream dancer 12" and so on to this present day.
I even hand painted the Trancendence record cover by Takashi and the astrological chart by Jon on my black leather jacket which is without doubt why I got into graphic art in the first place. (Thank you for that)
I was lucky enough to have met Midnight, Jon, Ben, Jeff and Dana at a gig, which was quite difficult because we'd never actually seen them without masks before, but they radiated a magnetic presence so that made it a little easier.
When the P.A blew up and the lights dimmed and flickered, I turned to my girlfriend and said "now you see how powerful that guy can sing, he'd silence thunder"

I thank you Mid and CG for the music and for the scene YOU helped to create.
They say that certain people come into our lives and make a difference and leave their mark on us, make us think, feel, create and I know Midnight was one of them albeit on a miniscule way through his music, forum chats, so heaven knows what all those that are close to him are feeling right now.

Rest in Peace Comet boy.

Ok, I've unfortunately never met this dude (I'm from Germany) but I can say that Midnight really touched my soul, like all the other Crimson Glory guys, of course. Especially the first two Crimson Glory albums are amoung my very favourite albums since I've got 'em back in 1988, first on vinyl, later on CD. From the first time listening to the albums I was really impressed by this great uncomparable voice. I feel the same way today when I would listen all the day to the three CG albums recorded with Midnight to hold his memory down on earth, even here in Germany. I am feeling really sad though I just know him from the records.

Midnight - all the best in heaven dude. And my deep condolence with his family, his friends/band mates. Hold him in your hearts forever.

I was fifteen when I first heard Crimson Glory through John Drenning's brother Ritchie. It was just a four song demo tape but they instantly became and have remained my favorite band. I can honestly say knowing them changed my life. It's rare to actually know your idols. I have many memories from the few years that I got to hang around them. I had so much hope that they could get it together again for another album, but now that can never be. Midnight was the best voice I've ever heard, a great soul, and a really good person. He and his music will live in me for the rest of my years.

Just wanted to post my condolences to the band and to Midnight's family.  Crimson Glory's music, and Midnight's voice, are one of a handful of bands/vocalists that have truly touched my life in a profound way.  I got Transcendence when it came out 21 years ago and have never stopped listening.  Through many new bands and singers that I've enjoyed between then and now, few others have approached what you all accomplished with that album.  It remains a steadfast member of my Top 5 metal albums of all time.

I have never seen the band, nor Midnight, perform.  To be honest, I've been really surprised how broken up I've been over the last few days over someone I never met or even saw.  That is a testament to this power of his voice, and of this band's music.

Perhaps it is now time for me to stop dreaming of reunions and start diving into the Wade Black era of CG, as I will admit I've been a stubborn holdout.

If I knew then what I know now, I'd have made the trip to Greece for that reunion show.

Rest in peace, Midnight.  You have touched my life and that of many others.  I will miss you every time I listen to your soaring vocals.

I really appreciated the band's comments above, both all the positive comments and Jeff addressing the not-so-positive.  It gives those of us who never met him a more complete picture of the man.

I too have been a fan of CG and Midnight's voice since I was a kid (now 37). The first time I heard his voice, I thought "My god, who the hell is that singing?" From then on, I was hooked. The passion that Midnight sang with was really something I have never heard out of any other singer. Watching him perform was even more magical. To this day, I listen to the Transcendence CD and still get shivers hearing it. I will really miss your magical voice Midnight. I hope that sometime in the future, CG would remaster some of the old stuff and put together a new CD for us to remember Midnight with. I play CG in my police car (Yeah, I'm 5-0 in Texas) all the time. I'm always excited to let new metal heads hear CG (Midnight) when I get the chance. I'm also a senior Field Training Officer for the Police Department, so if your training with me, YOU WILL LISTEN TO CG!!!! Rest in Peace my friend...
