fi:lo:math (2004) Filomath Unsigned
|
Wow. When I started receiving CDs from bands to review for Room With a View, I didnt expect to get something which would so quickly become one of my new favourite albums. Filomath have done a fantastic job on this album, and its just crammed with pop gems which make you want to jump up and dance along.
The aesthetics of the album itself are impressive for an unsigned band, they have obviously put a lot into the production but I was even more impressed at putting the CD on. From the second 'A Place in the Sun kicks in to the last notes of The One, there is not a bad song on here. What is particularly nice is that you can hear in the music that Filomath are a band who do not take themselves too seriously, something which many bands today fall victim of. Moreover, the poppy feel of the music is definitely something which is steered clear of by most bands today. That is, except for blink-182 cover bands. One of which Filomath are certainly not.
Although they are not setting out on a Columbus-type journey, trying to discover any new territory, what they do re-discover is fantastic. Each chorus on this album is so perfectly constructed; it is begging to be played on MTV. Which, of course, it has been music from the album was featured on the 2004 MTV Movie Awards.
Favourite tracks on the album for me include 'Halos', 'Surrounded' and 'The Lotto', but honestly, every song is brilliant. The album could provide a perfect soundtrack to a slightly cheesy but romantic teen movie of the sort that people feel slightly guilty about owning, but secretly are totally in love with.
Go buy this album.
