First of all, I would just like to thank the citizens of this nation in my little way for turning out and voting. Moreover, I am so proud to have been one of the millions of people who voted for Barack Obama. I had this sick feeling in my stomach up until this evening that this country was as angry, scared, and hateful as I have often suspected it was. Do I have the cynical punk rock part of me that thinks that Mr. Obama is another career politico who says what he needs to? Of course. Do I think on that great day in January we will suddenly be a nation at peace? Our troops will be home safe? Our sick will be taken care of? Our homeless will be housed? Our jobless employed? Our environmental mistakes undone? Our nation brought together? No, of course I don't. But that's not what this was about. Barack Obama may only be capable of being as good as the system he works in, but we as people proved we are better, smarter, more caring, compassionate, and reasoned then that system ever gave us credit for. Truly remember this day and this feeling. For my generation, all of the great leaders have risen and fallen before our time. But I truly believe we may stand on the brink of social and global change, and the feeling of once again loving your flag, your country, and STILL loving the whole world is as euphoric as it can be. So thank you Americans, and thank you to the world. We will try harder now.
And as a side note, to those who voted on Proposition 8 in California to ban gay marriage; shame on you. You will go down in history as the people who took away civil rights from your fellow countrymen and women. You are the opposition in Selma, the police in Birmingham, you are the tanks in Tianamen, you are the Taliban in Afghanistan, and you are a disgrace to this nation.
