A Visitor's Guide to Hungry Hearts Ministries
What is this church about, anyways?
Hungry Hearts Ministries is a ministry dedicated to worshipping God in Spirit and Truth. We believe in following God's commandments in the Holy Bible, especially those in first five books of the Bible. We do not believe that commandment-keeping saves us, but that commandment keeping is apart of showing our gratitude to God for saving us from death. We observe God's Sabbath and keep it holy (Exodus 2:8-11), celebrate the Holy Days in Leviticus 23, follow God's dietary laws in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, and give two tithes (one for ministry [Lev. 27] and one for celebrating the Holy Days [Deut 14]. We keep God's commandments so that we can be as much like Jesus Christ as possible and feel as much of God's Spirit as possible. Commandments are simply rules for holiness, or rules that set us apart. We also believe in the manifest presence of God and that Jesus still baptizes in the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues. Being baptized in the Holy Spirit does not save you, but it does increase your personal intimacy with Jesus Christ. We believe in the manifestation of spiritual gifts found in Romans 12 and I Corinthians 12, as well as the five fold ministry in Ephesians 4. We believe that God's Spirit guides us in commandment keeping and gives us the power to actually keep the commandments of God.
We do not believe that we are only Christians on earth. We believe that whoever is led by the Holy Spirit is a child of God (Romans 8:14). We believe this ministry is a part of the last generation that is called to worship God and that this ministry is apart of the restoration of all things (Acts 3:19-21). As Isaiah 46:10 says, God declares the end of a thing from the beginning, and the beginning of a thing from the end.
Jesus Christ observed God's commandments and manifested the power of God's Holy Spirit. We seek to do the same. As Paul said, be imitators of me, as I am an imitator of Christ (I Corinthians 11:1). We simply want to be more like Jesus Christ. We are not legalistic, and we do not exclude ourselves from believers who have different views than ourselves. We welcome all brothers and sisters in Christ to fellowship with us so that we can share Christ with one another.
The commandments of God become written on our hearts and minds once we enter into the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34). As a result, God expects our commandment keeping not to be simply expressed by outward observance. God expects our commandment-keeping to be inwardly motivated out of love for what God has done through the sacrifice of His son Jesus Christ. We do our best to follow only what is found in the Holy Bible, because as I Timothy 3:16 says "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." We do not incorporate aspects of the Mishnah or Talmud, also known as the Oral Law. We do add some aspects of Jewish Tradition, also known as Hebrew Roots, that help manifest God's Holy Presence and help us understand the love of our God and Savior.
Some unfamiliar terms you may hear in our services or read in our materials:
Hebrew Blessings– These are blessings that usually begin with "Baruch atah Adonai…" and they are simply blessings we speak to bless God for what He has done for us.
Tallit– These are prayer shawls that many in our congregation wear. God asks us in Numbers 15:37-41 to wear tassels on the corners of a garment or covering to remind us that we follow God's commandments and that we are God's people.
Shofar– This is also known as a Ram's Horn and is usually translated as trumpet in your Bible. The Ram's horn originates with God's provision for Abraham on Mount Moriah. The Ram's Horn or Shofar was blown for many occasions in Ancient Israel: war, a call to repentance, Holy Days, or the entrance of a King.
Torah– A Hebrew word that commonly refers to the first five books of the Bible or the commandments God gave to Moses. This word is also translated as teaching or instruction.
Menorah– This was the lampstand commanded to be built for the tabernacle of Moses in Exodus 25:31-40. The Menorah is a symbol of Jesus and the light he provides to the whole world.
Aaronic Blessing– This blessing, found in Numbers 6:23-27 that was spoken over the people of Israel.
Adonai– Hebrew word for Lord
Ruach HaKodesh– Hebrew for Holy Spirit
Yeshua– Hebrew for Jesus
Yahweh– Hebrew for God
Ha Mashiach– Hebrew words meaning "The Anointed " or Messiah (Messiah simply means Savior)
El-Shaddai– Hebrew for "God Almighty"
Tongues– We believe that tongues manifests through a prayer language (I Cor. 14:14) and through a message in tongues for the congregation (I Cor. 12:10). Both come about as a result of being baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2 and Acts 10).
Commonly Asked Questions:
What's with all this Jewish Stuff, Anyways? In our services, you will notice that we speak Hebrew Blessings, wear prayer shawls (Tallit), blow Shofars, light a Menorah, and incorporate other traditionally Jewish elements. Most of these are simply instruments of worship found in the Holy Bible. They help prepare us to receive God's Spirit in services and understand our relationship with Jesus Christ. To find out more about the Hebrew elements of our worship, please pick up the blue booklet entitled "Hungry Hearts Ministries: Who we are and What we Do".
Do you sacrifice animals? We no longer offer sacrifices because a perfect sacrifice has been offered for our sins. As Hebrews 10:4 says, "it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins." Hebrews 10:9-14 explains that Christ's sacrifice was perfect and made once for all men's sins. As a result, Christ's sacrifice satisfies the requirements of sacrificial law.
If you follow the commandments in the Hebrew Bible, do you stone commandment breakers? As James 4:12 says, "There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?" Part of God's provision of Grace in Jesus Christ is that our ultimate judgment will be carried out by the hands of the law giver Jesus Christ and not our fellow brothers.
