Omniscience
It wasn't even about that really to be honest. It was just that had things been different... you know... different place; different time...
The cat of course displayed her usual dominant trait - somewhere between complete indifference and omniscience - and jumped up for a nuzzle, a clawing of the lap and a bedding down. He scratched under her neck, watching her concede and slowly tip back her head by degree, way past the point you might have thought possible.
Lit only by flickers from the muted TV, she shook off her ears, licked his fingers clean and settled in for naptime. Once the purring faded to heavy breathing, he lifted the card from its yellowed envelope and the letter from between the leaves of the card, and read again. A sigh sat on his lips and his brow was furrowed, but as he fingered the tiny face in the Polaroid he smiled, leant his head back against the chair and allowed himself a smile.
