On Disney property, the House of Blues stood empty, while over 2,000 people stood outside, wrapped around the building in chilling wind and fading sunlight, waiting for the doors to open. There would be few late comers for this Shinedown concert. You'd think the majority of fans would be male, but there were plenty of females, and a wide range of ages in both genders. The buzz was definitely about this being an all acoustic show. Even relatively unknown opening act Number One Contender would be stripped down.
Actually South Carolina based Number One Contender were well received! The reason being, who wouldn't have appreciated vocals like that of lead singer Reid, and their songs are interesting. When you are stripped down to the core musically, that's when raw talent prevails. Can't cover up poor vocals or weak songs with layers of sound. Then when you add energy into acoustic sets, by really getting into what you've created, it is as powerful or at times more powerful than music with full instrumentation. Reid didn't let a quiet crowd deter him from being an excellent front man, working the audience by covering all corners of the stage, even stretching out his hand to touch hands shooting up from the front barricade. Good connecting power. Beautiful playing by all members of this band, they jelled like magic. N.O.C. showcased how their music and playing stands on it's own and surely won many new fans.
