"give me truths;
for i am weary of the surfaces, and die of inanition.

if i knew only the herbs & simples of the wood,
rue, cinquefoil, gill, vervain & agrimony.
blue-vetch & trillium, hawkweed, sassafrass, milkweeds
and murkey brakes, quaint pipes & sundew,
and rare & virtuous roots,
which in these woods draw untold juices from the common earth..

..i thank the joyful juice for all i know--
winds of remembering of the ancient being blow,
and seeming-solid walls of use,
open & flowing.."

did ya know that ralph and thoreau both had some of the early copies of
the Bhagavad Gita? that's where that self reliance trip he got on came from.
I guess Arjuna getting back up in the chariot fired him up.. i love the line,
"which in these woods draw untold juices from the common earth.."

I've read a bit of Emerson and he reminds me of a line in a movie I saw about Martin Luther. Martin Luther was talking about the Devil offering him the "opportunity" to preach in Hell....
