Clements Kadalie (ca. 1896-1951) was South Africa's first black national trade union leader. He headed the Industrial and Commercial Worker's Union (ICU) from its inception in 1919 until his resignation as national secretary in 1929. The meteoric rise of Kadalie and the ICU signalled the emergence of South Africa's black proletariat as a potential challenger to entrenched white domination of the established economic and political order.

Clememnts was born near Nkhata Bay, Malawi. An amazing Afirerican who I think should be talked about in Malawian schools and put on bank notes. http://www.answers.com/topic/clements-kadalie

Maybe if he was from central or southern regions we would have heard about him in Malawian schools already, another example of a great man being forgotten cause he didn't belong to the dominant cultural group. Nkhata Bay has produced Kenneth Kaunda who was Zambia's President for 27 odd years, Alecki Banda is still flying the flag for Nkhata Bay-denied the chance to succeed Muluzi, Banda was arrested in Zimbabwe due to Trade Union activisim under the colonialists. Obviously the local herb isn't inhibiting people's sense of social justice. Stars of the lake, if only they combined with the stars from the mountains, deserts, rivers and towns to make the SADAC region a force to be reckoned with.

True, the North was kept under wraps.I feel though in Clements case he just got absorbed into South African history. Amazing thing about him is he managed to organise a trade union despite not being able to speak a single South African language. Then again Banda ruled for more than 20 years without being able to speak his people's language. Can you imagine if Tony Blair only spoke German!
I have faith in SADAC.
