What a week that was.
Last Thursdays gig at The Legion was a brilliant night all round. I warned you it was a top line up and all the bands delivered on theie myspace promise.
“Telesterion” were first up, locking into some heavy grooves in a Spacemen 3 meets stoner/drone rock kinda way. Hypnotically brilliant.
Then “Sunlight Service Group” got up and played like it was 1967 Haight Ashbury. Particularly noticeable was the brilliant Grace Slick like joint vocals of keyboard player Zuza Piorkowska. The Jefferson Airplane comparisons were impossible to ignore.
We were on next. It’s not for me to say whether we were any good or not, but we enjoyed it, bashing roughly through our “Hawaii Five-0 Theme” cover at the beginning and me accidently turning off the bass and drums pedal, being the most memorable bits for me for differing reasons, haha.
Next up, “Honrada” were amazing. Main guy Eds big suitcase full of pedals provided quite a headfuck of sound. When they pulled up our Antonio to add some improvised sax at the end, I thought my head was going to explode. We’re playing with them again on the 18th November at Goo Nite at The Buffalo Bar. I seriously recommend you come and check them out. Who knows, maybe Antonio will get up with them again?
The brilliant Maria Slovakova finished the evening off in style backed by laptop and cello, which I think worked even better than the drums/cello set up I saw last time we played together. I think it’s because you could really hear the rhythm of the monologues she was reciting much clearer.
I didn’t plan to stay til the end, cos I knew we had to be up really early to catch the Megabus to Hull for our first gig outside London (set up by our friends from there The Notebook). But, we did…and paid the consequence.
Well it had nothing to do with that, but we missed the Megabus (public transport and confusion were the real reasons). With only one more Megabus to Hull on the day, that was already fully booked, we went back to Clinker Central to weigh up the options.
To cut a long-ish story short, we hired a car and made the gig in time. Phew! The last thing I wanted to do was drive, when I was THAT tired, but hey….you have to do what you have to do.
It was all worth it in the end. We had a great time, met some great people and The Notebook were the perfect hosts (aswell as playing a brilliant set, as always). I should also mention Matt Edible (from The Holy Orders) who stepped in at the last minute to play a great solo set. I also enjoyed having a good chat with him afterwards. Really cool guy.
The after party went on til the wee hours (I was the only Clinker martyr that stayed up for that), then it was a horrendous seven hour drive back. By the time we reached London, it was a serious effort not to crash the car, I was soooooooooo tired!
It’s probably due to all that, that I now have a stinking cold, haha.
I still made it out Tuesday night to see Fraff, Mugstar and Electric Eel Shock at NHS (an Artrocker spin off night). I think you can see from the picture taken there that I could still do with a decent nights kip!
Anyway, next gig is at The Buffalo Bar at the legendary Goo Nite club on Wednesday 18th November. I’ll give you more details later, but its another great line-up (inc. Honrada).
Til next time
