Finding your sound and finding your voice is not as easy as some people might have you believe. Before The Nightmares ever came to be I was in another band called The Famous Monsters. It was the first band I ever took seriously and I spent the better part of my youth pouring my heart and soul into it believing that one day it would take-off. Almost every waking moment of my life was devoted to writing, rehearsing, gigging, promoting and after all the ups (and considerably more downs) that came with playing in an independent band there was a turning point. I realized that in it’s own way the music had hit a plateau. Over the years it had lost every semblance of personal relevance it had ever meant to me. The turning point for me was coming to this realization that I had changed - my mind, my outlook on life and my core set of beliefs. I had to make the decision to end the band for good and move on to other musical pursuits. Before that, I would have never imagined turning my back on all the hard-work and effort I’d put into that band over the years, but somehow it just happened. It felt right. In the end, I now realize that the greatest defeat as an artist and as a musician is not giving up on your music after years in the trenches - but in fact, the greatest defeat is not being able to remain true to what you are doing and rise up from your ashes and re-invent yourself.
