THE ZUTONS
The Zutons kick'in off their tour, at the Leas Cliff Hall, on 10th November 2008. Well it was a orrible night to go out, the rain was relentless (the cold stuff) ye know, but the Zutons made up for
that, by giving me the 'Zuton fever' I could'nt stop shaking and prancing about, I was made to feel 'right at home' for the night ! all the next day, my poor little leg's felt like they had two sledge-hammers tied to them. The things we go through for Rock 'n' Roll, hay.

Derby Assembly Rooms, November 17th.

This was our second Zutons gig together, the first coming shortly after we met in 2006 when we saw you at the Camden Roundhouse. Two years on, and we're still going strong. I'm happy to report that you are too.

We had a fantastic evening, and really appreciated the chance to see you on such fine form again. The set list was a great mix of all three albums, even if we were disappointed not to hear 'It's little things we do' ;o)

I wish I could say the same for the rest of the crowd, they really didn't seem to get into it until later on, when the tempo rapidly picked up. I suspect they took the name of the venue too literally, but never mind, they will learn in time.

Dave mentioned it was your first visit to 'Derby...Derbyshire'. I certainly hope you'll go back.

We salute you

Neil and Jade

Leeds on Friday 21st November was the third time this year I'd seen the Zutons. First time was in Dalby Forest during the summer, although the evening itself was more autumnal than a summer's one.

Second time was in Norwich on November 13th at the UEA students union. To say that venue was compact is probably not too far off the mark, but the stage wasn't big enough for the banner and the flashing Z to be hoisted, whilst the guy at the front with the bald head and the ZZ Top beard managed to turn the majority of the "dance floor" into a mosh pit with only a couple of well timed pushes. This night was topped off for me, by meeting Dave, Paul, Russell and eventually Abi whilst waiting fora taxi.

The set lists in Leeds and Norwich were identical (I think) with a only a couple of minor positional changes, but the band seem to have hit that happy state where they get the audience going with a few up beat numbers (makes me sound in me 60's), starting as always with Zuton Fever, before slowing things down in the middle with Confusion and Railroad before building to a great climax in the encore with ZutonKaamuun. Leeds was a much bigger venue than Norwich, but that wasn't reflected in any less banter between Dave and the crowd, especially the 7 foot woman who appeared towards the end of the show. All members are good musicians and they support and drive each on other on which only benefits the performance. At one point Sean encouraged Dave to add more "Pazazz" and things were notched even further up.

Credit for an excellent night must also go to the support group " The Redwalls", who really got the crowd going with some hard-rockin numbers.

Lastly, airplay seems to be in short supply for the Zutons at the moment which means that a large percentage of the public are missing out on great music from a great band. but that's their problem, What's yours ?

Hi, the picture below was taken at the Picture House in Edinburgh (november 25th). We came all the way from the Netherlands to see you guys (as you never seem to visit our country). But it was well worth the trip. We had loads of fun and you guys were simply brilliant.
And we were so glad that the concert had been replaced to the much more intimate Picture House instead of the Edinburgh Corn Exchange.
But PLEASE guys do include Holland in your next tour !!

Well how do you review a band like the Zutons? I mean really?
On this tour I've seen them at both Newcastle and Carlisle, opposite ends of the wall and opposite in terms of atmosphere and audience.
At both shows they opened with the temultuous 'Zuton Fever', a welcome return to a lost tradition that set the mood for the rest of the night. Newcastle, incredibly lively for a Sunday bounced and shook, those Geordies know how to have fun. At times the renovated concert hall floor seemed likely to give up on us (again). The crowd was a mix of ages, difficult to generalise, easy to please. Every upbeat song was an excuse to dance and the slower "Railroad" and "Put A Little Aside" let the masses take a breather. Those who could, sang along but everyone made an effort to sway or clap or move in some way. A manic energy unfurled from the music and electrified anyone that heard it.
Between the songs there was some disapproval for whatever creature is hibernating under Dave's chin. "Shave it off!" was a frequent taunt. Well actually it was made by me, thankfully me and Dave settled our differences over it at Carlisle. Apparently I'm the first to complain about it.
I must take the time to credit the Redwalls, they were a complimenting act, full of the same madness and excitement. Their debut single "Memories" will not leave my mind alone. The crowd at Carlisle definately approved of these young, handsome men from Chicago.
Carlise was a different gig altogether from Newcastle all the way over at the other end of Hadrian's wall. It was in a leisure centre for a start, an amazing venue but simply something new to me.
The crowd were young and studenty, ready for a good night it seemed. I was to be disappointed however by the lack of frenzied movement that I'd seen a week earlier. There were small isolated groups really getting into it, maybe a little too much. But the 'fever' did not spread that night. Not like that wildfire of mania in Geordieland.
After the show I did manage to collar Mr McCabe on the subject of his facial hair. It's not as bad ..r inspection I suppose. But he needs his 'dreads' cutting.

Well anyway, the shows were both fantastic. It being the 23rd time I've seen them now, I'm still not satisfied.

The pic is from Cambridge Corn Exchange from last night (3rd Dec). Well, what can I say? I've been to quite a few gigs lately (inc Razorlight and the Fratellis) and The Zutons have knocked the socks off the others. I first saw them live at V fest at Stafford this summer in the pouring rain and I was keen to see them again. They didn't disappoint! My favourite song is Valerie but the whole set rocked last night, especially the freestyle jamming at the end. How nice it is to see a band like the Zutons play a small venue like Cambridge and look as though they were enjoying every minute as much as the crowd was, and were not simply 'putting in an appearance'. The Zutons rock because they are such a unique mix of talent, versatility and cheeky liverpudlian charm! How many bands about these days play guitars, drums, tambourines, maracas, flute, saxophone and melodica all in one set?! Can't wait to see you guys again!
(I was the girl at the front with large biceps that Dave found funny - i ride racehorses by the way!)

God it was cold Tuesday in Stoke on Trent! As we parked the car on the ice rink of the car park and I saw the coaches and trailers neatly settled against Victoria Hall, I silently thanked the road gritters for bringing the Zutons safely to us. Running late from work, 'him indoors' and I proceeded to skate to the nearest Chinese buffet and forced the food down us (oh the hardship!). Unfortunately, the lure of the chocolate fountain was to much for me and we missed the first act to grace the stage.

Having got to the second row of the, at the time, small crowd, I was able to read the text of the young whippersnapper in front of me who reported to mummy that the first band were "quite good but a bit depressing"...but then, by this time, The Redwalls had been on stage for 10 minutes and she described them as "pretty good"...it's hard to please some people. "Him indoors" and I thought they were great and will be looking out for them in the future...although they did seem bemused by the polite clapping they were receiving...did they expect us to be jumping up and down to songs we've never heard before? How do you get your jumping tempo right if you don't know the song??

Finally, it happened...they arrived!!!! Starting with Zuton Fever was pure genius and enough to get those of us who are hardened fans into a state of near frenzy. I'm afraid I lost track of the order of the songs in my heightened state of agitation (and I hadn't even had a drink!! Unheard of!!) but I remember thinking it was a good mix of older songs from previous albums and the newest one. I remember swaying along with the crowd behind us to the slower songs when it was just Dave & Abi (Abi - What did he say to you about the microphone being too high?) and nearly breaking a blood vessel screaming along to Pressure Point...and laughing at the looks on the faces of the young whippersnappers when they were watching us all with disbelief that anyone over the age of 30 could possibly still be able to jump around...oh, those poor things must never have witnessed watching the Zutons play in a Big Top Tent supporting The Coral at New Brighton, or watching Dave practising his football skills (?) with flying toilet rolls at Cannock Chase, or trying not to slip over in the mud at a drenched V Festival in Stafford.

What gets me about the Zutons is that they let you know if they are enjoying themselves as much as we, the audience, are...and they tell you to F off if they feel the need (can't remember where that was now)...even "him indoors" could see that...that's what sets them apart from other bands, you feel like they are letting you into one of their practice sessions, and they just seem to do it so effortlessly...although how Abi dances around a stage in those heels is beyond me, I'm having to practice walking in my heels ready for my work's Christmas 'do' next week!

All too soon it must come to an end...and what a finish! Although I could hear faint sounds of The Coral initially, Zutonkhamon is a sound to die for...you can tell the fans who expect all songs to have lyrics and those of us who relish bands doing something that is more like a jamming session...yes it was an amazing climax to a fantastic gig...but it was still bloody cold outside on the ice rink!!

We went to see the Zutons on the 29th of November at the Carling Academy in Birmingham! We've been waitin to see them for ages and it was sooo good despite lead singer Dave being poorly! The instrumental blew us away with some serious drumming! and Abi was perfection! Would be great to see them in Liverpool as we never got the chance when we lived there and we could party in Heebies after! But we had a great night in Brum anyway and it was fantastic gig and a great Birthday pressie from my friends Dani n Debs!So tar guys!x
