The Chicago Defender, a paper that for 104 years has chronicled the lives of African-Americans, invites applications from graduate or advanced undergraduate students who are interested in working with the collections of archival material related to African-American history as documented and held by the Chicago Defender and its archives.

The Internship is part of the archives' commitment to foster a broad public awareness of the rich and important contributions of the Chicago Defender to the world, to offer new resources to historians and others who are studying the history of African-Americans as commemorated by the Defender.

Projects include: scanning images, organizing/arranging the newspaper morgue, transferring old paper files into new acid free file folders, completing a database on licensing and permissions agreements.  Interns will also be expected to help in the research and identification of various subjects in photographs.  The intern will assist in projects leading to the development of archives' exhibits and further research.

Interested students must submit a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, a college transcript, and a letter of recommendation to archives@chicagodefender.com.

The successful candidate must be able to lift and carry 20 lb. boxes, not be afraid to get dirty and climb a 6-foot ladder to retrieve materials.

The internship is unpaid, if your school allows it, internship hours may be used toward college credit. The start date is September 1 and the end date is December 15.

Intern will be subject to a background check.
