Up in Da Club With Alexander Thompson: The Anna Copa Cabanna Show

By Alexander Thompson

Sequins! Spandex! Wigs! Australian import Anna Copa Cabanna spotlighted her '70s-style variety show at Joe's Pub the other night. The room was packed with a downtown glam rock crowd supporting Ms. Cabanna's
quirky show. Anna takes her inspiration from bands like ABBA, as well as underground punk bands like Crass. With glittery back up dancers, and loads of costume changes, Anna broke out into funky medleys including Madonna's "Burning Up" and Jimi Hendrix's "Rire." She plays the guitar and sings hilarious ballads she writes like one called "Patrick Swayze," and even plays the xylophone. Anna kept the crowd roaring with laughter with her wit and off the cuff remarks. She closed the show with a sexy finale, singing and dancing to Nick Gilder's "Hot Child In The City." Too much! For $12, this is definitely a bang for your recession buck!

Great article on Anna Copa Cabanna! My wife and I flew in from Chicago to see Anna live and her show was FANTASTIC! We made a weekend of it and ate at some of New York’s best restaurants, went to museums, etc. Anna is not only a great performer who puts on what I consider to be the best show in any town, but she is great for New York tourism. We plan to come back to see Anna and New York again!

This show looks great, why didn't I see it? I'll have to make a point to make it to the next one. May 2nd at Joe's Pub, right? I'll be there...

I missed this. For that reason, and for that reason alone,I completely hate myself.
