Yesterday the news broke that Mike Vick would accept a plea bargain agreement for the federal dogfighting charges he faces.  It appears as if Vick will have to serve between 12 - 18 months in a federal penetentiary and then face an NFL suspension when he is released.  Now, I don't know Vick personally.  I've run into him a few times out and about but this whole case is very unique on many levels and raises some eyebrows.

First, it's my opinion that the government pursued Vick because obviously he was committing a crime, but more specifically because he has an extremely high profile which would raise awareness on dogfighting as well as help to further the career of the prosecutor (wink wink).

Now my opinion is that dogfighting is an ugly activity.  I agree that it should be illegal, but that makes me question other activities that are legal in this country.  I can get a permit to shoot wild game who have absolutely no chance of defending themselves and then drive home with let's say a deer on the hood.  Why is the life of a dog so much more sacred than the life of that deer?  Is it because one is a pet?  What I'm getting at is that our laws are very subjective .  It all depends on the public opinion.  Years ago there were no laws against dogfighting.  With the emergence of groups like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) there are now laws that have criminalized such activity.  Now I'm not making any excuse for Mike Vick.  He knew what he did was illegal.  Now not only has he sacrificed his freedom, but he can lose up to 83 million dollars!!!!  That troubles me more than anything.  The fact that a cat who has the world in his hands would surround himself around people who encourage such activities.

It's a tough lesson to be learned, but we as Black people in this country need to realize that us having tremendous wealth has never been accepted by the white mainstream and with that being said DO NO FUCK UP because you'll go from being praised to persecuted in a matter of minutes.

Well, Mike Vick was definitely wrong for doing what he did, no doubt about that. However, he is not the only person to get prosecuted for this crime; people get arrested pretty often for dogfighting. I do not really feel much sympathy for him because when he became a PUBLIC figure, there are responsibilities that came along with it. Being from the hood does not justify doing hood activities, and being a public figure doing hood activities is like painting a target on your forehead. Of course they want to make an example of him! If that is what it takes to stop people from treating those dogs that way...so be it. But, again, I do not think that he was treated any better or worse than anyone else in the same situation; it's just that it was publicized to the Nth degree.

And as far as your question regarding the differentiation between killing a deer and killing a dog, people don't dogs. People who kill deer and other animals are doing it for sport, true enough, but those animals are also eaten for human survival. To fight a dog to its death, just to dispose of it and get the next one ready...I mean Sean, this is truly barbaric!

I think it is really funny that you are victimizing Vick though. To say that you are bothered because he is losing millions because he surrounds himself with people that he shouldn't...he is a GROWN ASS MAN! No one put a gun to his head and told him to hang with them and do the things that they do. Mike Vick is no rookie!!! He's been playing for like 7 years; he should know who and what not to do. He has more money than most, so he could have bought a clue if he didn't have one already.

But, on another note, one of his "boys" could have taken the rap for him. That's kind of f*ed up!

In response to Octavia's comment...i agree with Sean...i think he's a victim for the simple fact if he was in the neighboring county in VA it would have been considered a misdemenor, it would not have been blown up this way and he would probably be playing ball right now.

DEER HUNTING A SPORT? lol! That was cute....there is nothing remotely sporty about SHOOTING A DEER AND HANGING HIS HEAD OVER YOUR FIREPLACE! For the sake of fairness...its just as cruel!

He made a bad decision...whoopdy doo...FINE HIM...he's HUMAN! He's entitled to make a bad decision and learn from his mistake...i can see if this was his 5th time making the same mistake and they always gave him a slap on the wrist...This was a wake up call for him...ok he's learned...NOW THE MEDIA SHOULD GET OVER IT...but NOOO! the system is trying its best to drag his name in the dirt and make an example out of him!

I just don't think he should be judged by this. Yes its unfair to dogs to fight and people get paid, but now there is a sport called ULTIMATE FIGHTER where PEOPLE do the same thing...basically fight till they pass out or cant continue and people PROFIT...network television stations get PROFIT... etc...SO WHATS THE DIFFERENCE????? This Mike Vick Double Standard is becoming very redundant to me and no one can justify why this man is going through the motions when there is more important things going on, and similar activities involving different participants (ie. deer, people).

My Brother, You called it right on this one my friends, I had this same discussion yesterday because a friend of mines was working on this little gadget that he uses to sit in the trees and hunt with...Now I don't dog fight nor do I hunt but to me their all one in the same "why should any animal be more important than the other"....He brought up the allegations with other athletes ( Ray Lewis) among some and it's just f'd up to me that this happened and the punishment he's getting, but as an adult mike should have took more precaution especially since he is in the limelight as an athelete....Sorry to say it but this is because some old white ladies panties are in a bunch over this that made this situation worse....I'm quite sure that there are more murderers, rapist, drug dealers, etc. That the feds can be spending their time on making a case against than this.. I just hope this brother can manage to salvage his career if not we'll hear about him playing overseas...

I agree with your comments totally. Though I believe that Michael Vick should have thought twice about this one, and is wrong for being involved in any way, let's be real, they wanted to get Vick from jump so they got him. They wanted to make an example out of him so they did. They want to throw the book at him because he's young, black, rich, and famous. I REALLY hope that the rest of the young, black, and rich population (that I hope to one day be a part of)are taking notes. This is a wake up call. When you reach a certain status level, you are looked at from every angle. Please believe that hands are cocked ready to throw whatever they can at you rather it be that big a$% book or whatever. Though it isn't fair, the game and the rules change when we reach a certain level, and that needs to be realize. You can see for yourself just how quick the world (especially the white world) will turn on your ass, no matter how much money you have brought to this city so don't get it twisted. They smile and they cheer and they wear your jerseys but ass SOON as you jack something up, that whole appeal is out the window, rarely getting a second chance. He might have pleaded guilty but people need to realize that there are so many things going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. Like what deals were on the table, what the stipulation were. Let's be forreal, I would take a 18 month sentence over a 10 year ( or whatever he was facing if he didn't) anyday...so why are people trippin like the don't know what the deal is? Was Vick wrong? Yes no question, but ruining his livlihood? Come on! There are plenty of our melanin challenged counterparts who have done FAR worse and have gotten countless slaps on the wrist.

What's so interesting to me is that groups like PETA will protest and throw paint on your a$ for some animals but forget the hungry homeless people in the streets...abused children...equal rights, or even our kids being killed in the streets everyday. Let's not forget that not too long ago, people were hanging us by our necks from trees and being set free the next day. If the laws were equal across the board, I wouldn't have such a HUGE problem with this. I mean look at what's going on in Louisiana right how. White kids beat up a black boy...they get suspended from school. Black kids beat up a white boy they're looking at 20 years.....The singer Brandy leaves home one morning and gets in an ACCIDENT where a woman was killed unfortunatley and gets booted from the show Americas Got Talent. Paris Hilton puts people in danger driving on a suspended liscense and i'm sure she's driven drunk and high and she GETS A SHOW. Does anyone see the problem with this? All I gotta say is Beyonce, Don't F*ck up....I luv ya girl, but trust me when I say that all of that bootilicious mumbo jumbo will just mean black girl that that F'ed up to them.

Well I blogged about this and i've cussed out all the white people at my job for weeks now, in my opinion NO i don't think he needs to go to jail...why you ask...PETA can kiss my ass...for the simple fact...they don't go after DEER HUNTERS...they don't go after the government for fuckin up the rain forests...and i don't see them taking their asses in the hood trying to resuce stray fuckin dogs...so they can all KISS MY ASS!

If Vick committed this crime in the neighboring county (in VA) this would have been considered a misdemenor, unfortunately it occurred in a county where this type of cruelty to animals is a felony...VICK probably didn't think 1 that he would be facing this type of charge and 2 that people would take this and blow it up the way they did...

I'll be honest I grew up around DOG FIGHTS, I've watched the dogs get in-bred and everything, so this type of pit bulls would not make it two feet near someone's door step as a PET...they're crazy ass dogs POINT BLANK! He apologized for the shit that should be good enough...make his ass pay a fine and LET IT GO!

There's a fuckin war still going on in IRAQ, senators in the white house are solicitng muthafuckas for sex in airport bathrooms, dick chaney shot someone in the face and didnt get jail time, katrina victims and new orleans are still fucked up, and you're telling me that fighting dogs is more important then that shit.....this country and its priorities are FUCKED UP HANDS DOWN!

The man made a bad decision ok we're human...i agree that he's in a different tax bracket and all and he should have known better, but it happened GET OVER IT! He doesn't have a record, he's one of the best in the league, so why are they trying to make an example out of him...WELCOME TO AMERICA!

Thank you Jesus finally someone that argues the same point of facts that I have been trying to get ppl I encounter to realize. I totally agree with you 110% on this fact. Im hurt beyond belief that this young black man had no one around him that could or would tell him that what he was doing could effect his career. But I guess those same ppl didnt want to miss out on pay day.....but now they all are missing out on pay day. Like you said its a tough lesson for such a talented young man. Im still a huge Mike Vick fan.

Black , I agree that our laws are very subjective.I think it really does depends on public opinion. I dont see the difference between dogfighting and pro boxing match; the same rules apply! Gambling etc...
