Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

1. Punch Bowl grew out of the bass line that now anchors every verse (Greg was playing out his frustration after a long day in Xplorador, Punch Brothers' trusty 15 passenger rental van).

2. The lyrics from Part One of The Blind Leaving the Blind's first movement come not from the perspective of the story's main character, but rather from its main character's departing love interest.

3. Punch Brothers all refer to the last four minutes and twenty five seconds (Part Two) of the first movement as "Red Handed".

4. The use of the figure (and the figure itself) introduced by the fiddle at 7:40 in the second movement is a timid tip of the hat to the second time through the main theme of the first movement of Brahms' Fourth Symphony.

5. During rehearsals, the 2/5 of Punch Brothers who play fret-less instruments repeatedly stated that they would prefer for the C sections of the third movement to be notated in Db, but they were unable to get that through the thick skull of the 1/5 responsible

6. The main theme from Part Two of the third movement was conceived in the parking lot of the Green Hills YMCA in Nashville, TN, after a particularly lonesome treadmill session.

7. It is its composer's opinion that the fourth movement is the most successful movement of the piece structurally, if not necessarily his best writing overall.

8. Punch Brothers made Sometimes out of four themes by three different band members. The slower middle section was meant to sound like a John Hartford tune being cranked out of a warped music box.

9. At first, the chorale-ish section at the end of Nothing, Then (now instrumental tremelo and pizzicato) was sung, before the band realized that they didn't really know how to sing chorale-ish section.

10. It'll Happen is from the level-headed point of view of the new love interest introduced in Nothing, Then.

Well damn. I just told somebody today that the main theme from Part Two of the third movement was conceived in the parking lot of the Green Hills YMCA in Nashville, TN, after a particularly lonesome elliptical machine session. Now I have to correct myself next time I see them.

It's encouraging to know that YMCA inspired music even better than the genius of the Village People.

You should make your own brand pf Punch Brothers punch, bottle it, and put these handy little facts under the caps, a la Snapple or Nantucket Nectars. If you bottle it, they will come. After the initial idea of sun and warmth made me think of your former cohort Sean Watkins... I thought about you, Mr Thile, today. Listening to Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour, when the theme was baseball and Bob failed to recognise any of your amazing baseball-related tunes; I'll have to drop him a line and inform him of the error of his ways. Be well. : ) --Rhiannon

I think I might have seen you at the YMCA in Green Hills that day. I know the real reason you felt so lonely. There was some Grease Ball asking you if you ever considered introducing rap into your musical genre. Alas some things should never be spoken.

Go Racers!

I have a question. Is there a hint of Radiohead's Morning Bell towards the very end of the 4th Movement, just coincidence, my imagination. It's very familiar, but I think the 4th movement it my favorite.

I definitely do not agrre with point 7.. "It is its composer's opinion that the fourth movement is the most successful movement of the piece structurally, if not necessarily his best writing overall"

..the first and third movements are the best in my opinion. Also, there has been MUCH more written by this certain composer that have absalutely blown my mind out of the water. Movement four might be the tip of an extraordinarily large iceburg, if I do say so myself.

Very cool. Based off the music you play for the corale-ish section (9), you could possibly figure out how to sing the coarale-ish section now and do it for live shows!

Good to hear that some good things have become of poor Xplorador. I hope you get a bus soon!

You are way too anal. Just keep writing and playing the music from your heart. That's what sells it all. And get your asses back to louisville! You guys pussyed out due to the weather. What you can't drive in the snow? Play during Derby week I promise a good time.

It makes me sick that I couldn't make it to your show in Lexington because of a damn wedding. I mean seriously. Pisses me off. Come back somewhere close to me... like Ashland, so I can see you guys. Your music makes me want to never play my violin again because I feel so incompetent.

"5."-->Yeah, but is it Charlie Or Ira that is 3/5?
Do blind people "see" when they dream?; or do they just dream sounds?
What about Helen Keller, did she dream at all?
I liked it when John Hartford, in "Down from the Mountain", said he don't sing certain lyrics in "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" on account of general principles, with Mike Compton in the background saying a whole lot without speaking a word.......

Is it wrong to head bang to the 3rd movement repeatedly, while blaring the tune round the neighborhood? Honestly it's what I do. I get smirks and stare down's but I figure it's their first time allowing their ears to have some soul food vs. the McDonalds music that's played around here. (That would be Soddy Daisy)

I love Gabe's slow mournful sound right before Chris sings "Lord I'd be in your debt"... and the thumping buildup of Chris & Chris , I actually look at that point like I'm having a seizure in the car while driving but I've been lucky to have no ems guys show up!

Keep it up and Punch it up!

As a classical singer at school, and former composition-major, this one made me really REALLY laugh.

One question occurs to me after having read this 22 times. I doubt you will ever see it, but here goes:

"6. The main theme from Part Two of the third movement was conceived in the parking lot of the Green Hills YMCA in Nashville, TN, after a particularly lonesome treadmill session."

Does this story refer to the melody, the lyric, or both simultaneously?
