The overdue Bio-Pic based on the life of Harvey Milk, the first elected openly Gay city Supervisor for the city of San Francisco, Ca. is finally being released to much of my anticipation.
It will be released on November 26, 2008 to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of his untimely death.
Harvey Milk was born on May 22, 1930 and was murdered, along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, on Novermber 27, 1978 by an ex-police officer turned city Supervisor and SUPER HOMOPHOBE Dan White.
Harvey Milk broke barriers and fought so hard for the rights of the LGBT community in times where even in liberal San Francisco, being a member of our community was still looked down up and shunned. In 1972, Harvey moved to San Francisco and settled with with his partner Scott Smith (whom he'd met in New York) and opened a Castro Camera, a camera shop in the Castro District. He grew as a community leader and founded the Castro Valley Association of local merchants, as well as representing the neighborhood businesses in dealing with the city government. He did great things not just for the LGBT communities, but for Labor Unions and other Neighborhood Groups. HE WAS A TRUE AMERICAN HERO.
After Dan White was arrested, in his defence trial, they used what is now known as the "Tinkie Defense" and was senteced to an insulting 7 year prison sentence for both murders. The vertict ran through San Francisco's gay community and it errupted in what is now called the "White Night Riots". Now you know not to fuck with an angry queen, let alone THOUSANDS of them, so you can imagine the damge that was created. White was parolled in 1984 after only serving "5" years of his sentence. Eventually he offed himself in his wife's garage...oops, sucks to be him, no love loss there.
Alas, film maker Gus Van Sant has made what appears to be an AMAZINGLY great film about our beloved "Mayor of Castro Street". Gus Van Sant is known for his more popular indie flicks sucha as "Drugstore Cowboy", "My Own Private Idaho"' "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues", "Good Will Hunting" and 2003's much talked about "Elephant", which was losely based on the two guys that shot up Columbine.
Milk promises to be an amazing movie about an even more amazing human being and will be portrayed by one of my all time favorite actors, not to mention celeb crushes, Sean Penn. It also will star James Fraco as Harvey's partner Scott Smith; Victor Garber as Mayor Mascone and Josh Brolin as Dan White.
Mark your calanders for an historic movie on Nov. 26, 2008 that will surely be amongst the heavy weight contenders come awards season. I wouldn't be surprised if Sean Penn took home another golden Oscar.
Ch-Ch-Chek it out!!! ..
