Hi everyone,
I’m finally back home, my
new home, in NYC! Of course, the Big Apple is not new for me, but to
call it home has a slightly different impact. I started renting the
place in the middle of the summer, but because of my schedule on the
road, I haven’t been here much. So now, I get to soak in the energy
of my new neighborhood, and get settled in. I’ve been doing things
like discovering I live near Trader Joe’s (yes! I’m cooking. And
no, its not the ready-made stuff either. I don’t have a microwave.
Anyone have one that they don’t want?), staking out a hair salon to
keep my ultra sophisticated hair style in shape, finding a laundromat,
a Duane Reade, a coffee shop that has cozy couches and free internet
and has a bathroom that isn’t “out of service” all the time, a
hardware store, and finding great venues for live music. Honestly, I’ve
heard some of the most interesting and captivating music and sounds
in the subways. It reminded me of when I went to Prague in the winter
of 2001 and saw a quartet of glass harmonica players on the Charles
Bridge. Amazing!
Besides the hustle and bustle
of daily life in the streets of NY, on Monday, I had one of those “New
York moments.” Within a window of 2 hours, I saw Beyonce, Jay-Z, President
Obama in his motorcade, and Bill Clinton coming out of Barnes &
Noble about 3 blocks from my apartment. I love the city that raised
me – Philadelphia – but no matter how much brotherly love it has,
it did not give me the thrilling moments I experienced on Monday afternoon!
Anyway, it’s hard to believe
that the summer has already passed. It went by so quickly, yet so much
happened. We made our recording which we’re stoked about, played some
amazing places including Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where I had a close
encounter with a black bear (I’ll post pics on our twitter channel!),
played a couple of outdoor shows that were really fun, and planned for
the future.
Next week will be fun. We are
playing our concerto that Jenn Higdon wrote for us with Marin Alsop
and the Baltimore Symphony. This will be very meaningful to play with
her since she was one of the first conductors who led the Curtis Symphony
Orchestra in my first year at school. My god, that was 13 years ago
now! Wow!
That’s it for now. I’m
headed to my violin doctor to pick up my poor instrument, which had
several openings in her. Until soon, enjoy the fall! And stay in touch.
