Current mood:Working is a mood?
After imparting mouthfuls of philosophies and countless examples of character building experiences, I had the chance to talk to Janis Ian about the musical fears I had in my own life. She said, “Give them what they want. The worst thing you can do is suck. And that’s not all that bad.” And all I could do is laugh, and say “I’ve already done that, Theres really nothing more to be afraid of.”
Mike Reid, who wrote the song “Can’t make you love me” told me that his biggest regret was making an album he didn’t believe in, and that it was “Better to fail on my own terms rather than to succeed on someone else’s.” Warner Chapel’s wipeboard in the hallway told me “Fear is not a growth strategy.”-Warner Chapel Publishing. I got to ask the A-list session players what they felt was their biggest complaints between musician and engineer in the studios. (This is not to mention the actual Parthenon-like awe instilled from the studios like RCA and blackbird, or the grassroots soul of those like Vibe and Idiot Dog.)
Not all the Grammys in the world could make these people believe they were any better than anyone else out there writing music. The amount of talent in this city is overwhelming and inspiring, and the professionalism and humility of the amazing musicians I have met here should be an example to all of us. Nashville is truly a town to be respected with the utmost sincerity. Anything less than reverence for its history and culture would be a sincere disrespect to the only art form I ever felt connected to- song writing. I am lucky to have experienced all of this, for sure.
Boston is colder than ever, and Im beginning to feel the pressure of the grind getting back at me. As for us, we are back into the depths of the Berklee Studios and otherwise, recording our first EP, which you will be updated on FREQUENTLY.
Brett Michaels Rock of Love will destroy your mind. Don't cave. Stay strong.
