BRISTOL EVENING POST:
Crackerjack rating: 9 / 10.
"BATH’s hotly tipped psych-rockers Ulysses kickstarted the evening with
a hugely enjoyable set of instantly infectious classic rock in the
making.
The riffs are matched by the tunes (and the jumpers) and the Croft
faithful bobbed as one to the standout Dark Old Days, possibly the
finest – and only – current example of hard rock tango."
JAY WILLIAMS
& FROM VENUE MAGAZINE:
"Unashamedly nostalgic and brashly good fun, Ulysses are a machine-tooled fit to play Espionage.
The high level of guitar chugs-to-the-gallon means we've mentioned echoes of The Faces, Slade and Thin Lizzy in previous dispatches; tonight we'd throw in the Glitter Band for some rabble-rousing heavy drums and accompanying "Heys!", and a blush-free lift of the central riff from Cream's take on Willie Dixon's 'Spoonful'.
Still the longer we trainspot, the more we miss the point: this is loose rock, tightly played (a particularly impressive feat with new drummer Shane Maxymus only recently in situ), pieced together with care and no little inspiration.
Our perfect listening suggestion would involve slowly cruising wide suburban blocks beneath a cloudless sky, windows down and stereo blaring, arm on the sill. If you could arrange to do this in a Chevy El Camino with Nixon apparently on the verge of resignation, you've nailed it."
