Discussion with Ryan Dulavey, Fred Van Lente, and Jim Salicrup at 7pm



MoCCA is pleased to invite you to a discussion with Ryan Dunlavey, Fred Van Lente and Jim Salicrup to celebrate the exhibition of Dunlavey's work and the release of Comic Book Comics #3 on Friday, January 30th. Reception for the artist follows. 

Free and Open to the Public.



Ryan Dunlavey's illustrations and comic strips have appeared in MAD, Wizard, ToyFare,The Princeton Review, Time Out New York, Royal Flush, and Disney Adventures. A Brooklyn-based cartoonist, he is best known as the artist and co-creator (with Fred Van Lente) of Action Philosophers, which won a 2007 Library Award. In early 2008, Dunlavey and Van Lente teamed up again to self-publish a second series, Comic Book Comics, a cartoon history of the American comics industry from 1896 through the present day. The series is currently in progress and is scheduled to be completed in 2009.



Fred Van Lente is the critically-acclaimed writer of such comics as Action Philosophers, Comic Book Comics, Super-Villain Team-Up/MODOK's 11, The Incredible Hercules (with Greg Pak), and is a leading creator of Marvel Comics' all-ages line.



Jim Salicrup is editor-in-chief at Papercutz, publishers of the new Nancy Drew, Classics Illustrated and Tales From The Crypt graphic novels. Jim began his career at Marvel, where he edited X-Men, Fantastic Four; Avengers, the best selling Spider-Man # 1

A judge has awarded the family of Superman's co-creator Jerry Siegel co-ownership of Action #1.  This panel will examine the behind-the-scenes history of this landmark case and discuss means for the future of Superman, comics and creators' rights.

Jessica Abel and Matt Madden, creators of the textbook Drawing Words and Writing Pictures, talk to teachers about creating and using graphic novels in the classroom.  This in-depth discussion goes through the steps of taking a graphic novel from concept to comic, then discusses ways that students can engage creatively with graphic novels.
