Once again Califas based publisher Calaca Press and Tejas rooted publisher Red Salmon Press have teamed up to publish another politically and socially provocative title, Brown unLike Me: Poems from the Second Layer of Our Skin by Ft. Wayne, Indiana poet Emmanuel Ortiz. Brown unLike Me is the poetic narrative of one man’s exploration of the world through Latino eyes, a collection of poems celebrating identity, language, family, and community while confronting issues of racism, colonialism, assimilation, and war. Brown unLike Me takes the reader from the political battlefields of Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Chiapas to the shifting ethnic landscape of the Midwest, where basketball courts, bookstores, airports, islands, fields and factories are all a part of a bittersweet backdrop for a range of figures whose stories contribute to a deeper understanding of what it means to be Latin@/Brown/Other at such a critical political moment.

Emmanuel Ortiz is a third-generation Chicano/Puerto Rican/Irish-American community organizer and poet who is a founding member of the Latina/o writers/poets collective Palabristas: Latin@ Word Slingers. His first chapbook of poems, The Word is a Machete: Post-Pocho/Puerto Rican Poems of the Personal and Political was self-published in 2003 and in 2004, he co-edited the anthology Under What Bandera? Anti-War Ofrendas from Minnesota y Califas (Red CalacArts Publications). As an activist poet he has read his work in various cities nationwide, at uncountable readings, rallies, conferences, classrooms, and benefit shows.
