Here's what's happening this week!
Monday July 20th -
Static Jacks http://www.myspace.com/ thestaticjacks Finally! An indie band with optimism! Dip into the tunes below and be stoked that there are kids still buying guitars out there instead of Ableton.” - RCRD LABL Fan Tan - http://www.myspace.com/ fantanmusic We guess we're into totally epic synth pop lately, because Fan-Tan's big and sprawling melodies are hitting us kind of right. Listening to this, we really wish we were in a massive rainstorm and there was a camera shooting down on us from a crane, because then we could outstretch our hands and lift them high to heavens while shouting a roar that's equal parts joy and pain. That's what Fan-Tan makes us want to. - Oh My Rockness
Wednesday July 22 - Mannequin Men - http://www.myspace.com/ mannequinmen “ While the widespread Stones and Stooges comparisons fit the bill here, MM's earnest embrace of guitar solos, simplistic riffs and barroom backbeats reflect other less chic, although equally rocking, influences as well. The subtle guitar lick on "The Pigpen" smacks of early Tom Petty, right down to the whiney chorus of "The girls, the girls, the girls/ They wanna do the pigpen." With their massive drum builds and simple chord progressions, "Private School" and "Pattern Factory" wouldn't sound out of place in an arena setting, though Fresh Rot's modest production quality's not fooling anyone for the Budokan.” - PITCHFORK Davilla 666 - http://www.myspace.com/ davila666 They're like a Puerto Rican Black Lips.” They're from Puerto Rico alright, dark romantic peepers, black mesh tank tops, an underlying rhythm like you're surprised they chose such Lips-ly hooch-gulp garage rock to which to dedicate their livers and the next couple years of their lives.” - The Agit Reader ..
Saturday July 25 Mixel Pixel - http://www.myspace.com/ mixelpixel "When you want to shake your groove thang, and you know I do, this Brooklyn electro-pop foursome is just what the doctor ordered...Mixel Pixel brings boy/girl vocals with lyrics mainly all about partying, relationships and drugs. Synths, samples with underlying driving guitars..." - My Old KY blog Reredux (Members of Brazilian Girls) - http://www.myspace.com/reredux Paul & The Patients - http://www.myspace.com/ paulandthepatients “A quintet from Brooklyn, it doesn't crib entirely from the '80s; in fact, the group's sound is really fresh. But there's an unmistakable '80s ring to the guitars and some of the melodies…” NPR.org Sunday July 26 - Wooden Wand - http://www.myspace.com/ woodenwand “ The sounds the group made were fluid, too, incorporating everything from the '60s mysticism of Donovan and Van Morrison to free jazz, noise rock, folk traditionals” - Allmusicguide LARKIN GRIMM http://www.myspace.com/ larkingrimm < Grimm arrives blessed with an unbelievable back-story. The 26-year-old was born into the religious cult The Holy Order of MANS, was raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains, traveled through Alaska, Thailand, and Guatemala, and eventually settled, at, um, Yale. After spending a stint in Dave Longstreth's almighty Dirty Projectors project, Grimm started fashioning her own music; freeform acoustic songs which showcased her voice.
