Dear Trust Friends,Summer is heating up and so are things at the Trust for the National Mall! New Signs to Unify, Beautify National Mall,
If
you were one of the National Mall's 25 million visitors last year, you
may have noticed how difficult it can be to figure out how to get where
you want to go. A lack of consistency and communication has left the
National Mall littered with hundreds of different kinds of signs, yet
navigating the park's 700 acres is still a trying task for visitors who
are unfamiliar with the National Mall's layout. But all that is about
to change.
Last
September, the Trust contributed $1.1 million to the Park Service for
the Centennial Challenge, a federal matching program. Thanks to the
hard work and dedication of Trust supporters, the total of $2.2
million will equip the National Mall with signs that will help visitors
find their way.
For
the first time, signs will include National Park Service, Smithsonian
Institute, the National Gallery of Art and District of Columbia
attractions in one unified system, allowing visitors to easily find
what they are looking for. The Mall will also get updated maps which
will provide visitors with helpful hints for making the most of their
time on America's Front Yard.
The new way-finding system was designed by Wayne Hunt of Hunt Design.
Hunt has worked with such world-renowned entities as the Kennedy Space
Center, Los Angeles International Airport and Hong Kong's Disneyland to
design way-finding systems that ensure visitors always feel at home.
The
Trust is thrilled to begin our first project with the National Park
Service to tangibly enhance the visitor experience on the Mall. The
signs are being fabricated this summer and installation will begin in
September We hope you will join us in the fall for the official
unveiling- stay tuned for details!
