I want to thank PETA for giving me so many good resources!

"Why do you try to force vegetarianism on others? Isn't it a personal choice?"

From a moral standpoint, actions that harm others are not matters of personal choice. For example, murder, child abuse, and cruelty to animals are immoral acts, not matters of choice. Today, our society encourages meat-eating and factory farming, but at one time, society also encouraged slavery, child labor, and many other practices that are now universally recognized as wrong.

See what goes on inside a factory farm.

"Animals kill other animals for food, so why shouldn't we?"

Most animals who kill for food could not survive if they didn't, but that is not the case for humans. In fact, we would be better off if we didn't eat meat. Many animals, including some of our closest primate relatives, are vegetarians. We should look to them, rather than to carnivores, as models of healthy eating.

"The animals have to die sometime, so what's wrong with eating them?"

Humans die, too, but that doesn't give you the right to kill them or cause them a lifetime of suffering.

"Don't farmers treat their animals well so they'll produce more milk or eggs?"

Animals on factory farms gain weight, lay eggs, or produce milk not because they are well cared for, comfortable, and content but because their bodies have been manipulated with medications, hormones, genetics, and management techniques. In addition, animals raised for food are slaughtered when they are extremely young, usually before disease and misery decimate them. Factory farmers raise such huge numbers of animals for food that it is less expensive for them to absorb some losses than it is for them to provide humane conditions.

Watch footage of hens in factory farms.

"What will we do with all the chickens, cows, and pigs if everyone becomes a vegetarian?"

It is unrealistic to expect that everyone will stop eating animals overnight. As the demand for meat decreases, fewer animals will be raised for food. Farmers will stop breeding so many animals and will turn to other types of agriculture. When there are fewer of these animals, they will be able to live more natural lives.

See how factory-farmed animals live.

"If everyone became vegetarian, many animals would never even be born. Isn't that worse for them?"

Life on factory farms is so miserable that it is hard to imagine that we are doing animals a favor by bringing them into that type of existence and then confining them, tormenting them, and slaughtering them.

"If everyone only ate vegetables and grains, would there be enough to eat?"

Yes. We feed so much grain to animals to fatten them for consumption that if we all became vegetarians, we could produce enough food to feed everyone on Earth. In the U.S., animals raised for food are fed 70 percent of the corn, wheat, and other grains that we grow. The world's cattle consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people—more than the entire human population.

"Don't vegetarians have difficulty getting enough protein?"

In Western countries, our problem is that we get too much protein, not too little. Most Americans get at least twice as much protein as they need, and too much protein, especially animal protein, can increase your risk of osteoporosis and kidney disease

You can get enough protein from whole wheat bread, oatmeal, beans, corn, peas, mushrooms, or broccoli—almost every food contains protein. Unless you eat a great deal of junk food, it's almost impossible to eat as many calories as you need for good health without getting enough protein.

"Don't humans have to eat meat to stay healthy?"

Both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Dietetic Association have endorsed vegetarian diets. Studies have also shown that vegetarians have lower cholesterol levels than meat-eaters and are far less likely to die of heart disease or cancer. The consumption of meat and dairy products has been conclusively linked with diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, clogged arteries, obesity, asthma, and impotence.

Read more about the health benefits of a vegetarian diet.

"Aren't humans natural carnivores?"

Actually, a vegetarian diet suits the human body better than a diet that includes meat. Carnivorous animals have claws, short digestive tracts, and long, curved fangs. Humans have flat, flexible nails, and our so-called "canine" teeth are minuscule compared to those of carnivores and even compared to vegetarian primates like gorillas and orangutans. Our tiny canine teeth are better suited to biting into fruits than tearing through tough hides. We have flat molars and long digestive tracts that are suited to diets of vegetables, fruits, and grains. Eating meat is hazardous to our health and contributes to heart disease, cancer, and many other health problems.

Read more about meat-eating myths and the truths behind them.

"Don't dairy cows need to be milked?"

In order for a cow to produce milk, she must have a calf. Each "dairy cow" is impregnated every year so that she continues to produce a steady supply of milk. In nature, the mother's calf would drink her milk, eliminating the need for her to be milked by humans, but on factory farms, calves are taken away from their mothers when they are just a day or two old so that humans can have the milk that nature intended for the calves. Female calves are slaughtered immediately or raised to be dairy cows. Male calves are confined for 16 weeks to tiny veal crates that are so small that they cannot even turn around.

Because of the high demand for dairy products, cows are genetically engineered and fed growth hormones to force them to produce quantities of milk that are well beyond their natural limits. Even the few farmers who choose not to raise animals intensively must get rid of the calves, who would otherwise drink the milk, and send the mothers off to slaughter when their milk production wanes.

Get answers to all your questions about dairy products.

"I know a vegetarian who is unhealthy. Is vegetarianism really good for people?"

There are healthy and unhealthy vegetarians, but doctors agree that vegetarians who eat varied, low-fat diets stand a much better chance of living longer, healthier lives than their meat-eating counterparts.

Read about the link between vegetarianism and shrinking waistlines.

"Why should I feel bad about eating meat? I didn't kill the animal."

You may not have killed the animal yourself, but you hired the killer. Whenever you purchase meat, the killing was done for you, and you paid for it.

"If you were starving on a boat out at sea, would you eat an animal?"

I don't know. Humans will go to extremes to save their own lives, even if it means hurting someone innocent. (People have even killed and eaten other people in such situations.) This example, however, isn't relevant to our daily choices. For most of us, there is no emergency and no excuse to kill animals for food.

"Chickens lay eggs naturally, so what's wrong with eating eggs?"

The real cruelty of egg production lies in the treatment of the "laying" hens, who are perhaps the most abused of all factory-farmed animals. Each egg from a factory farm represents about 34 hours of misery and came from a hen who was packed into a cage the size of a filing-cabinet drawer with as many as five other chickens. At factory farms, cages are stacked many tiers high, and feces from the top rows fall onto the chickens below. Hens become lame and develop osteoporosis because they are forced to remain immobile and because they lose a great deal of calcium when they repeatedly produce egg shells. Some birds' feet grow around the wire cage floors, and they starve to death because they are unable to reach the food trough. At just 2 years of age, most hens are "spent" and are sent to the slaughterhouse. Egg hatcheries don't have any use for male chicks, so they are suffocated, decapitated, crushed, or ground up alive.

See the conditions on egg "farms."

"Can fish feel pain?"

Research has shown that fish can feel pain. According to Dr. Donald Bloom, animal welfare advisor to the British government, "Anatomically, physiologically, and biologically, the pain system in fish is virtually the same as in birds and mammals." Fish have fully developed brains and nervous systems and very sensitive mouths. Fish use their tongues and mouths like humans use their hands—to catch or gather food, build nests, and hide their offspring from danger. Fish also experience fear. An Australian study found that when fish are chased, confined, or otherwise threatened, they react with increased heart and breathing rates and a burst of adrenaline, just as humans do.

Learn more about fish.

"Isn't seafood healthy and low in fat?"

Contrary to popular belief, fish is not a health food. Fish flesh contains toxins from the water that fish live in, and those toxins get passed on to people who eat fish. Fish raised on farms are given antibiotics, which are also passed on to consumers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 325,000 people in the U.S. get sick or die every year from eating contaminated fish and other sea animals. Even if you could be sure that the fish you eat were free of chemicals, the flesh of some sea animals, especially shrimps and scallops, contains even more cholesterol than beef!

The world will be a much better place if the meat industry was to be abolished. What suffering do you think it will cause humanity?

A lot of evils like war, paedophilia, rape, and other atrocities that men commit will disappear because they will learn what compassion and sensitivity is about. It might not sound to make sense to you, but when there is a lack of respect or sensitivity where ANY form of life is concerned there will always be war and evil.

There are other reasons why people get cardiac arrest, and isn't prevention better than the cure? A lot of people don't get enough exercise and don't eat the right foods, plus we live in such a fucked-up society that worships stress, work and money.

A lot of evils like war, paedophilia, rape, and other atrocities that men commit will disappear because they will learn what compassion and sensitivity is about.

you are joking right? you think that rape, and sexual assault and murder are all because we eat meat?!?!?!?! WOW!!!..... And here I thought that these were because mankind is fallen, and sinful......that our hearts are corrupted....thanks for clearing that up!

Seriously..... while I agree with you as to your thoughts that society seems to increase our stress and so forth, and that we dont get enough exercise ....I cannot agree with you on your view that our evil workings are all because we have somehow forgotten to be sensitive to the life of animals and such. Now I realize that I am about to cause a major arguement with what I am about to say but then again......I am ok with that. because I respect your views enough to here them out and so I expect the same consideration.

If you were to ask me if I place a higher value on the life of a human than that of an animal, then I would answer yes. without hesitation. Now I am not one to be cruel to anyone or anything.....that being said..... we live in a society where it is a 25,000 dollar fine to "accidentally" kill a baby bald eagle (in the egg)..... but yet if a woman wants to go out and have an abortion she is given $500.00 to do so. now I am not the biggest fan of Peta.....mainly because I do not like double standards..... so I ask you.... if you view human as equal with animal then why dont you protest this too?....but maybe you dont view human as simply animal..... so here is another double standard..... why is it that you always see some whack job spraying paint on some old woman's fur coat.....but you NEVER see said whack job spray painting the leather vest of a biker...... As a Matter of fact...... if you can supply me with a video of someone spray painting a Hell's Angel's leather jacket...... then I will choose not to eat meat for a year.

Now, getting back to the original topic..... you have chosen to live as a vegetarian....or vegan.(which is great, dont get me wrong) ..I dont know you very well, so I do not want to assume..... BUT..... do you honestly believe that all of mankinds sufferings can be limited to a lack of empathy over our eating meat?

and while I will wholeheartedly agree with you that we eat to much meat.....( I truly do think we do).....I do believe that God has said that meat IS an acceptable form of nutrition.... and I will be happy to provide basis for that....

But I will......(without hesitation).... declare that I hold a human life more valuable than that of an animal. and that is the question that each one of us must ask ourselves.

Transparent Ministry is so transparent that I can see right through your self-righteousness. Just because you are intelligent and Christian, it doesn't mean you shouldn't keep an open mind. It's funny how you talk about double-standards, but did you even read the article, or follow any of the links to find out more about this issue? No, you have taken an attitude of, "I'm right, and I know it." You have only addressed the issue of whether we should eat meat or not, not the rest of the issue, which is: Am I supporting something that is morally wrong because of the factory farm industry's inhumane treatment of animals? You should be saying, "Lord, please forgive me for supporting such an evil thing, I've been an ignorant bastard." Take a look at some of the videos, there is no way you can say they are biased, they are only facts that you can see with your own eyes. Then please ask yourself, would jesus support this? And Josh, you're obviously ignorant also. Get some info buddy, please. Then talk your "genius" shit.

I was a meat eater for 26 years before i was exposed to the truth by a friend. I used to dismiss it fast as well, until I was actually so bored, I decided to check out the "Meet Your Meat" video. Not anymore, I will not support this evil. And that is what it is, evil. Tell me it's not...only after you have watched this video (it's on my page).

I wonder if "Josh" is aware that the people who work on factory farms are absolute subhumans... Mankind would be better off if this industry of brutality ceased. I'd personally rather see people lose their jobs than watch animals suffer in such horrible conditions which they have no control over. Watch a video or two inside of these farm factories you support, and see the sordid enviornment animals are FORCED to live in, and how theyre physically abused at the hands of man. Tell me, if meat eating is "okay" then why don't we just start eating humans? Animals act upon instinct, as where humans are capable of cognitive thought. Animals don't know any better and are not malevolent creatures. Yet human beings murder, rape, abuse others and the world around them. We're the biggest parasite the Earth has seen. So why don't we just mass slaughter evil individuals (there's so many), or those who possess no function or intelligence (the excuse we use for animal eating), such as babies and mentally retarded people? We can just eat their flesh, now would that be right? I say if we're unwilling to eat our own kind, many of whom are disgrace in representing us as a whole, we have absolutely no right in abusing or mass slaughtering animals for our selfish gain. There's no need for it. You can sustain life without eating meat, so I ask you... Why not?

I think factory farming and animal abuse I very wrong. Mad cow disuse and bird flue are a result of bad farming methods and if we continue down these line we will be facing plague.

I really am supportive of

www.themeatrix.com/

and of www.organicconsumers.org/

we should treat animals and nature with respect if we want angry sort of sustainability to our environment and the world around us and I think it is not healthy how much America eats meat, and too much meat is not good for you, and than too much of anything is not healthy.. it seem America encourage eating excess meat like it encourages excess use of gas with suvs BIG trucks.

However to attack people who eat meat I thin k is wrong. Is my cat evil because it eats meat? Are wolves lions and triggers evil because they eat meat?

How about the Indians.. Have you studies what a great respect they had for animals and to respect nature by not wasting single scrap of the animal and to be very careful about not eating meat in excess in order to not deplete the species. The Indians had a love for animals and a love for nature, and only very ignorant people would say otherwise. When the Jesuit order came over here they ordered the bison stock to be  mass murdered just for the sake of harming the Indians source of food and what they held sacred.. Now who is the murderers.. can you see the DIFFERNCE... can you differentiate.. or can you only see ALL meat eaters as evil villains?

To demonize someone and equate that with murder is just ridiculous. If people united to be respectful of animals and nature and to incorporate humane farming methods and bring back family farming then we will be doing good, but if you focus all your energy on attacking and name calling on people who eat meat then you movement will get NO WHERE guaranteed.

I feel unhealthy when I eat meat too much, but I also feel unhealthy when I don’t' eat enough.. I’m m very in tune with my body  so I am very aware that this is fact certainly for me.

If we got rid of factory big industry farming then that would solve big corporate entities trying o induce us to buy as much as people can swallow.

You see in many areas I would agree and support what you believe n, but when you say eating meat is like baby killing then in that case I would se you as a extremist and reject your movement entirely when unfortunately when we could all find middle ground to agree on to help make the world a better replace and make options for people who eat meat to do it in a environment friendly way that isn’t' cruel to animals in such a way that we have these disease stemming form the way animals are treated in factory farms.

Personally I thin vegetarian recipes.. especially raw vegetables are great... but I like to add meat to mine, but it is a small proton compared to the vegetables.

YES we have  canned teeth because our diet is not supposed to be primarily comprised of meat, but it is necessary or have some meat in our digest to be healthy.

Yes eating excess meat and factor farmed meat is not good for you, but good meat in moderation is good for you.

the media passes around lots of myths about sea food just as they say bananas , avocados and every other natural food was bad for you at one time or another.

I can tell you right now their are many extremely healthy people who lived a LONG time who embrace moderations and balance n all things and they are very healthy people.... Too much water will kill you... It is excess and waste s that is the problem... I suggest you look for embracing solutions we can all embrace instead of attacking people and driving people away form environmentalist altogether.
