Disguise
Intimidation drowned me in her prescence As I struggled for any form of breath to speak to her. Sophisticated sorority girl, she waves and says hi and all I do is smile, and slightly nod my head up. Thursday evening, this day is different. Fresh haircut, well dressed, crisp kicks, her waterfall will not drown me today. I have safety equipment, fully prepared to go whitewater rafting inside her mind. I am inextinguishable fire today. She waves, I say "hey, how're you doing?", she says fine, we exchange majors, religious beliefs, favorite foods, sports and cell phone numbers, all in an hour's conversation. But something was wrong. The fire that I possess is undermined by her flame. She has real fire and it has been blown in my face. Twenty-four hour morning breath has melted my skin this entire conversation. No longer drowned, but charred with her inextinguishable fire. We finish talking, promise to call one another. Upset, embarrassed, amused... I walk away... wishing I never tried to swim in her water.
