Yubisumo is the combined artistic efforts of Japanese artist Hideyuki Katsumata & Oakland artist Billy Sprague. The two met online a year ago and exchanged a series of collaborative artwork via Airmail. Enjoying the results, the two decided a series of workshops at Sprague's studio in Oakland was in order. Together they materialized new forms through surreal figurative exploration. Yubisumo means "Thumb-Wrestling" in Japanese. Through use of interweaving thumbs, fingers, eyes and animal fur markings, new creatures emerge from intestinal jeanie lamps... The two artists morph each others lines, twisting and pulling until a desired result is pinned down.
