Interview: Bill Kidney
It's been a while since we've heard from our friends out east, and so we are bringing you an interview with Bill Kidney, frontman and driving force behind Bill Kidney and the Complete Control. Bill Kidney grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, home to some of theMovementz' favourite artists. And as for the Complete Control section of Bill Kidney's musical project, they "have had more lineup changes than a pro-sports team". Currently, Bill Kidney is working with Gerry Rogers on drums and Aaron Judge on bass.Making music in eastern Canada always seems to work out well from the perspective of us Ontarians. What can be more inspiring to songwriters than being separated from all of the glitzy nonsense? But Bill affirms that every music scene has it's good and not so good qualities."The grass always seems to be greener on the other side of the fence. People around here all seem to want to be in Toronto and lots of Toronto bands want to be in Vancouver or Montreal. I think it just comes down to the fact that there are lots of opportunities all over the place, but you have to be able to make the most out of the ones you have."And that is definitely what he is hoping to do with his music, first and foremost attempting to make sure that his audiences are entertained. On a more profound level, Bill would also like to see that his personal world views are expressed just as easily through music. "We hope that people really understand what we're talking about and consider possibly looking at certain things differently. As a writer, I'm very anti-war, anti-racism, pro-human rights, pro-education, so hopefully those values will be perpetuated through my music."His most recent album, "Perception" (2006), is available for purchase via his MySpace page. A new album is in the works and will hopefully be out by winter of this year, featuring a more evolved sound. On "Perception" audiences will hear many songs that have been inspired by interesting events. One in particular is a piece called "Chemicals and Matter", which came about from an experience that Bill had while working in India. "One morning I was being taken back to my hotel after work and I saw a small child, about 4 years old, standing barefoot on the hot pavement wearing only a torn shirt. He was dirty, probably hungry, maybe even homeless. It made me very sad to see it. A few days before that I was talking to someone from Canada who had told me something to the effect of "we're all God's children" and when I saw the child, it seemed that if we were all God's children, then did this kid do something wrong or is God a bit of a deadbeat dad? Anyway, I just kept thinking about it and wondering why we have come up with the ability to fly, to go to the moon, make huge boats, but we can't help each other out more often as a society. It's even more relevant now that we're in a global recession and there are some people still spending tens of thousands of dollars going on cruises when others are losing their jobs and houses. When it comes to writing versus performing, Bill prefers performing. "It's the real test to see how people react to what I've written. Basically, it tells me if I'm doing a good job."What artists would Bill say have done a good job? "Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stevie Wonder would be on that list. I love the energy they put into a songs. Lyrically, I'm also a huge fan of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen. Often when I'm writing I will consider my lyrics by thinking, 'would Dylan ever say this?' and then edit accordingly. In my opinion, they've improved the world with their music.Bill Kidney and the Complete Control are soon releasing a video for "25 Miles" which will likely appear on YouTube. And if you're going to be in the East Coast, be sure to check them out on tour this summer. For more info or to pick up a CD, visit. www.myspace.com/billkidney.
