No idea what Bad Afro are going on about when they describe this album as "bubblegum pysch", a bizarre term that evokes images of The Archies covering The Pink Floyd! It would be more accurate to describe this CD as really good garage-psych-pop. The Setting Son is a Copenhagen studio group based around the considerable talents of Sebastian T.W. Christiansen, the writer of all fourteen songs.

All of the songs are of a high quality. From the intriguing guitar lines and urgent vocals of 'Running Demons' it's clear that something interesting is going on. Sebastian's songs are sometimes curious and winding but always melodic, ranging from driving, passionate garage pop to mournful psych. There are no standout tracks but the album really gels as a whole.

Producer Lorenzo 'Baby' Woodrose has assembled a really good supporting cast who really do justice to Christiansen's songs. Lorenzo also plays drums and sings. Adam Olson's lead guitar is never predictable or clichéd and is always imaginative. Sebastian's organ is also important to overall sound. Fans of contemporary psych should definitely check this out.

This is one of the most anticipated album debuts in recent Danish rock history, I saw their debut show at Bad Afro's 10 year birthday party, and really dug their set. So does it live up to the expectations? Hell yes, and then some! 14 short tracks of divine garage psych pop, high on melody, hooks and fuzz drenched guitars. The Setting Son is the brainchild of Sebastian Kristiansen who's nasal yet unique voice really drill the tunes into your head, this is radio ready r'n'r that ought to appeal to both rockers and teenage girls…in a perfect world that is. I'd be shocked if this fails to gather interest beyond the underground scene, then again I've been wrong before. Sebastian also handles guitars and organ, and is assisted by vets like The Untamed's Marco Burro on bass and Lorenzo Woodrose on drums + backing vox, he also produced the record. The vinyl single features a great track, "I Wish", on the b-side that's not available on the album. 5/5

Danish bedroom musician Sebastian T.W. Kristiansen is the voice, guitar and keyboardist behind this debut, 14-track album on Denmark's always compelling Bad Afro label.The Bad Afro people stumbled across some demos by young Sebastian, who's reputed to be something of a recluse, put a band underneath him and bankrolled the long-player. It's filed under "bubble gum psych" - which is to say it's somewhere between folk and fuzz while not taking itself too seriously. Lorenzo from Baby Woodrose drummed and produced, so you know it's going to be good."In a Certain Way" is the single - on 7" vinyl, no less - and is the poppiest moment on "The Setting Son". Catchy as a cold and more straight-ahead rock-pop than much of the rest of the album. There's a folky lightness in "All I Want Is You" and "Le Sacre Coeur" that catches a mood. The latter puts me in mind of '80s Australian band The Moffs who've had a bit of turntable time around the I-94 Bar of late. There's more crunch in "I'm Down" than anything The Moffs recorded with Kristiansen's lysergic opening scream and a driving fuzz guitar line.Some of these tracks are brief soundscapes rather than full-blown songs, with none running to three minutes and a handful ("The Setting Son", "I Wanna Be Your Boy") clocking in at half that. That's not to say something like the spacey "You Better Run Away From Me" doesn't have a beginning, an end and a middle; it's more like The Setting Sons' songs (try saying that three times fast) say what they're all about in a minimum of time and get the hell out of Dodge.The tendency towards economy is unusual in this genre and a bonus for people with short attention spans or ADHD. For their folky overtones, each of these songs has at least a toe planted in fuzzy rock soil, which should appeal to the rock dogs reading this. The fuzz riffing is more often than not supplanted by prominent keyboard figures and background vocals ("Running Demons", "All I Want Is You") to build an alluring sound. I'm tempted to throw in some comparisons to other bands in the same headspace, if only to demonstrate hipness and a growing catalogue of psych music in a similar vein, but it's far more sensible to tell you to hop over here and have a listen for yourself. – The Barman 4/5

Det danske plateselskapet Bad Afro har vært trofaste leverandører av kvalitetsrock i over ti år, og har med band som Baby Woodrose, The Flaming Sideburns, The Defectors, Sweatmaster, On Trial m.fl vært et av de viktigste selskapene for trofast levering av bra rock i Norden den perioden de har eksistert, og de har også vært med på å dra Danmark opp til nye høyder for landets rockflora i lag med navn som Raveonettes, The Blue Van og Powersolo m.fl.

Sebastian T.W. Kristiansen aka The Setting Son er det ferskeste tilskuddet og har med den selvtitulerte debuten klint til med et aldeles fortryllende og kontant popalbum med smått psykedeliske undertoner. Nå er det også Baby Woodrose-sjef Lorenzo som har rattet lyden, samt bidratt med instrumenteringer, noe som også preger plata på en positiv måte, da hans alltid klare referanser til sekstitallets undergrunn er tydelige. Med Kristiansens lyse, nesten heliumaktige, stemme, er det ikke vanskelig å få assosiasjoner til en tidlig utgave av 22 Pistepirkko (og norske The Dipsomaniacs på sitt mest tilgjengelige, for de som husker dem), selv om The Setting Son i flekkene er atskillig mer tilgjengelig. Låten All I Want Is You er dessuten en av de beste poplåtene jeg har hørt på leeeeenge. FOR en knallert!

Hinter SETTING SON steht als kreativer Kopf Sebastian T.W. Kristiansen. Ein junges Ausnahmetalent, das weit mehr als 50 Songs alleine komponiert und in seiner Kopenhagener Wohnung auf seinem kleinen 4-Spur-Rekorder aufgenommen hatte, bevor Lorenzo Woodrose auf ihn aufmerksam wurde. Und natürlich wollte Lorenzo, dass bald ein Album mit den besten dieser Songs zu haben sei, und darum schaffte er Sebastian schnell in ein Studio, lud als Gitarristen Adam Olsson (THE AIM) und als Bassisten Marco Burro (UNTAMED) dazu, setzte sich selbst hinters Schlagzeug, drückte vorher den Aufnahmeknopf und die Band legte los. Heraus kam ein schönes Garagepunk-Album, das Freunde von den NOMADS oder eben auch von BABY WOODROSE schätzen werden. Leider ist es erst im September in den Läden, aber als Appetitanreger gab Bad Afro freundlicherweise diese nette kleine Single heraus, und die ist eine der schönsten, simpelsten und charmantesten Garage-Singles dieses Jahres. Was macht Lorenzo Woodrose nur außer Musik? Schläft der Mann überhaupt? Kaum ist sein Album mit den Dragontears verklungen und seine Tour mit On Trial vorüber kommt er mit dem nächsten Projekt um die Ecke. Diesmal hat er allerdings „nur" als Musiker und Produzent fungiert. Die Stücke stammen diesmal von Sebastian T.W. Kristiansen. Dieser hatte die Songs an sich nur für sich geschrieben und als Demos aufgenommen, jedoch gelang die Musik über Umwege in die Hände von Herrn Woodrose der mit weiteren Musikern von The Aim und The Untamed sowie natürlich dem Autor dieses kurze, aber ebenso kurzweilige Album aufnahm.



Es passt sich in den nahtlospsychedelischen Kosmos von Herrn Woodrose ein, füllt jedoch eher die eher popbeeinflusste Ecke aus. Die 14 Songs gehen knackig los. Die Gitarren sind eher im Blues verwurzelt, rocken aber dennoch gut los. Dazu gesellt sich ein Ohrwurmartiges Keyboard, das an die seligen 60er Jahre gemahnt. Der Gesang klingt dadurch, dass er ständig verzerrt ist, rau und dies verleiht der insgesamt guten Produktion die Garagennote. Es wird auch häufig mit typischen Chören gearbeitet, die den Harmonieeffekt beitragen. Nimmt man nur z.B. den sechsten Song "I´am a looser", das mit seiner treibenden Rhythmusgitarre und der sich ständig wiederholenden Gitarrenfigur ins Ohr brennt. Später setzt dann eine herrliche Doorsartige Orgel ein, die einen direkt in die späten Sechziger zurückbeamt. Im folgenden "I´am down" wird dann mehr gerockt, fast schon gestonert. Mit der schönen Orgel im Kontext entsteht schon fast ein Psychobilly Song bester Garagenklasse.



Das Album klingt trotz modernster Produktionsweise so richtig schön nach den Sechzigerjahren, was diese Musik natürlich formidabel aufwertet und dieses Album mit 14 Songs auf gleich bleibend hohen Niveau zu einer der besten Veröffentlichungen im Bereich der Psychedelischen Garagenmusik der letzten Jahre macht. Ich hoffe, das es von den Setting Sons im Gegensatz zu den Dragontears, die ja auf nur ein Album beschränkt waren, noch mehr geben wird. 14/20 Wolfgang Kabsch

Wenn Kopenhagen das neue Mekka der europäischen Hippie-Gemeinde werden sollte, hat man mit THE SETTING SON auf jeden Fall schon einmal die passende musikalische Untermalung vorbereitet. Ein junger schüchterner Mann namens Sebastian Kristiansen ist das musikalische Gehirn und wird durch langjährige Veteranen von THE AIM, THE UNTAMED und BABY WOODROSE unterstützt. Lorenzo Woodrose war auch derjenige, der die Demos zuerst hörte, sich bereit erklärte, die Produktion zu übernehmen, nebenbei den Deal mit Bad Afro in die Wege leitete, und im Gegenzug darf er sich hier am Schlagzeug austoben.

Seiner Begeisterung kann ich nach Genuss der Platte nur zustimmen. In den psychedelischen Weiten der Sechziger Jahre Garage Rock-Kultur angesiedelt, präsentieren THE SETTING SON leicht melancholische Stücke, die auch auf dem Nuggets-Sampler neben den Klassikern eine vertretbare Figur abgegeben hätten. Die hohe Stimme von Sebastian Kristiansen zeigt sich dabei durchaus variabel und bringt die Songs mit leichter Verzerrung und naiv lyrischem Anspruch wie bei "I wanna be your boy" auf den Punkt. Hey, um solche Themen ging es damals fast ausschließlich! Ob die Hippie-Gemeinde allerdings mit den Uptempo-Rockern wie "Running demons" oder "I'm down" etwas anfangen kann, weiß ich nicht, die Flöte in "Desperate soul" wird ihnen aber sicherlich gefallen. 7/10

Der Dänische Songwriter SEBASTIAN T.W. wurde eher per Zufall vom BABY WOODROSE-Drummer LORENZO entdeckt und an Bad Afro vermittelt. Unterstützt von THE AIM-Gitarrero ADAM OLSSON und THE UNTAMED-Basser MARCO BURRO hat SEBASTIAN nun mit Hilfe von LORENZO WOODROSE sein selbstbetiteltes Debüt aufgenommen.

Klanglich wird sich eindeutig an den 60ern orientiert. Psychedelisches Garagen-Gerocke, das locker als TARANTINO-Road-Movie Soundtrack durchgehen würde. LSD-Farben springen durchs Gehirn und bringen das Tanzbein in Aufruhr, wilde Beat-Eskapaden geben sich die Tüte in die Hand. Die DOORS lassen grüßen und verschwinden im Nebel...5/7
