We’re always looking for the next Greil Marcus, Annie Leibovitz, or um…maybe not Monica — here’s how to get your illustrious career started.

Writers

Writers begin with album reviews, and can work up to live reviews and interview-based articles. If you can consistently pitch good ideas, we’ll definitely keep you around. We expect that our writers maintain a professional voice and are knowledgeable about the music they review. Performer is not a consumer guide or a blog — you are a critic, and your words need to be thoughtful and constructive.

To apply, email two PDF clips or URLs and a short letter introducing yourself and your experience to wcpeditorial@performermag.com.

Photographers

Our photographers combine creativity, professionalism, and technical virtuosity. Everyone starts with live photos, and can work up to portrait shoots as a way of trying out for paid cover shoots.

To apply, email a link to your portfolio and a short letter introducing yourself and your experience to wcpeditorial@performermag.com.

Interns

Internships at Performer last a minimum of three months. We require 8-10 hours per week during business hours (10-6, Monday-Friday) — slightly more around mid-month deadlines. Review and feature writing opportunities will made be available to interns depending on time and commitment. Your input on music coverage will be welcomed.

Editorial Internships

As an Editorial Assistant, you will learn about several facets of working on a music magazine, from assignments to copyediting to distribution. When articles start pouring in mid-month, you’ll be responsible for some copyediting and light fact checking. Throughout the month, duties will include screening new CD submissions, updating and expanding directories of different musicians’ resources, researching venues and independent media in different cities for our Tour Stop section, researching distribution points, light MySpace monitoring, and researching and writing music-related news shorts for the metropolitan areas of the West Coast.

Applicants must have at least one year of experience at a publication and a demonstrated interest in West Coast music. They should also be working toward a B.A. in Journalism, English or Communications.

To apply, please send us the following:

- a letter introducing yourself and explaining your interest in the position
- a resume
- a list of 10 West Coast bands you would like to see covered in the magazine
- two samples of critical arts writing (clips are preferable)
