Sonic Boom (a.k.a. Pete Kember) cofounded the protoshoegazer unit
Spacemen 3 way back in 1982 and currently works in the synth-driven
ambient group Experimental Audio Research. Kember—or would that be “Boom”?—is now focusing on his more rock-oriented project Spectrum. On its new LP, Mirror Eye, local quartet Psychic Ills continues its quest to create the dubbiest, most hypnotic psych-rock soundscapes it can muster. Cheval Sombre just released a lovely self-titled debut on Double Feature, a label operated by Luna alums Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips. Both contribute to the record, but the bulk of the disc is devoted to the work of Sombre and his producer, the aforementioned Sonic Boom. Like Boom’s own work, Sombre’s songs are deeply psychedelic, swathed in an enigmatic haze—it’s tempting to place sunglasses on the CD itself.
