ShyChlo and the Boys studio diary.
Good morning/afternoon/evening...
Firstly I would like to apologise for the longness of this E.P. ShyChlo and the Boys formed about a year and a half ago and we're only just recording our first E.P. There are good reasons behind this though, waiting until we had a good solid line up for a start, we've had a few changes but the last 7 or so months has been solid, we've finally got it right. Another thing is spending the time to really get our sound and make sure that the 5 songs we record are the 5 best songs we've written thus far. The final reason is we have been saving the pennies! But the time has now come and this is how it all went down:
Day 1: Wednesday October 1st.
We arrived at Hidden Track Studios (www.myspace.com/hiddentrackstudios) around 10ish, ready to get started on drums and bass. But with us things never go quite to plan..."Kev did you bring your drum stuff?"...."No."
Cut a long story short, Joel goes on a mission from Folkestone back to Canterbury to try and get this drum equipment, no luck, so he had to go to South Kent College to borrow it...cheers Ross!!
So we finally got started around 12:30pm! The rest of the day went pretty smoothly, drums and bass completed for 3 tracks, not bad for 6 hours work.
Day 2: Thursday October 2nd.
Anyone who knows Kev knows that he can be unreliable, as yesterday proved haha. But we still love him...most of the time anyway
So when I said "I'll pick you up from the cinema at 9:15am" I was getting ready to make the "Where the hell are you" phone call. But he was there, on time, wide awake desppite only having around 5 hours sleep.
The morning and start of the afternoon was spent working on the drums and bass for the final 2 tracks. It's a wrap for Kev and Joe.
At lunch Oli demonstrated the art of eating a pack of Jammie Dodgers in 40 seconds, it was more like 44 seconds but you can't be too critical of a talent like that!
The rest of the day was spent starting on Joel's guitars. I don't think people realise how much time can go into recording music. I always appreciate music more if I can tell that alot of time has gone into it. It just shows that the artist/band and people working on the track really care about the end product and won't settle for something half-hearted. Which is why it pisses me off when artists go into the studio and bang out an album in 2 weeks, they clearly are only worried about getting it out ASAP to get to the money making part. But that's another issue...What I'm trying to say is big up to Oli, we showed him the guitar sound we wanted and he got it spot on.
Day 3: Tuesday October 7th.
Another day, more hard work and fun of course, to be had. So after getting the sexiest guitar sound we could last Thursday, it was time to "do the damn thing." It was a long day to say the least, 10am-8:30pm! I can't remember the ins and outs of everything but Joel and Rick got all of their guitars down, with the addition of some lovely creative suggestions from Oli (cheers man.) It's a wrap for Rick and Joel. All instrumentation complete.
Day 4: Wednesday October 8th.
Spent the first couple of hours using Oli's super cool toy to make the bass sound like a bass and boy does it now sound like a sexy bass. Then it was time for me to finally get off my ass and do some work. Started around 1ish, which meant 5 hours for 5 songs. I was done in 4 hours (Quagmire style "alllll right!") Kev was asleep for 2 of those hours haha. It's a wrap for Chloe. We then did a few gang vocal which will make me chuckle every time I hear them I'm sure. Bit of singing for Joey and the recording process is done and dusted!
Day 5: Thursday October 9th.
So the final day has come, an early start for Oli but a late one for us. A day of mixing for Oli, we showed up around 3pm, 2 tracks complete, 3 to go. Not going to lie, we spent most of the time outside to allow him to work more effectively. But come 6:30pm-ish, everything was done, we had a listen...sounds awesome! Time for me to go to work then back to Joe and Joel's for another listen and to get the artwork done.
The EP's coming soooooooooon!
