This is not about politics or religion, this is not about being gay or straight, this is about love. Yes love, the same word that is defined as, "a passionate intense feeling of tender affection and compassion for someone" (Encarta Dictionary, 246), in the dictionary. Yet, people seem to misconstrue the reason for the on the going fight of legalization of same-sex marriages. People who oppose same-sex marriage think it's simply for attention, but of course it is for attention. This matter needs to be heard out, and rethought about. This matter needs to be elucidated, so the closed minded can commence on a better understanding. An understanding that seems to be intricate for a nation that is pleading for peace, and turns its back on people attempting to accomplish the same. And just because it seems different or even unusual to some it should not be discriminated against. This is a nation that has embraced the unusual, and has embraced it united. For instance our dearly loved new president, Barack Obama, is African-American. It seems racist to point out his race, but it was once something that mattered to this nation, yet the United States overcame this issue, because the truth of the matter is it does not matter, we are still all human beings. We all still have the same needs and desires, we all still want to love and be loved. ..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Oddly enough, around the 1980s homosexuals, mostly gay men, were being assailed because of the assumption that they were very promiscuous. It is ironic that the same group of people in this nation is now being denied their right to practice monogamy and safer sex, when a few decades ago they were harassed because of their sexual habit. William N. Eskridge, the author of For Better or For Worse?, a book about gay marriage states,

"It is true that men who have sex mainly with other men have a larger number of sexual partners and higher incidences of sexually transmitted disease, than men who have sex mainly with women, women who have sex mainly with me, and women who have sex mainly with woman (the group least at risk of disease)"(145).

For this is reason same-sex marriage should be legalized. The percentage of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS, can actually be lowered. Since it has been said that "Some 89 percent of persons known to have AIDS are homosexuals…" (Eskridge, 13) same-sex marriage would be beneficial to not just homosexuals but to everyone in the nation, possibly even the world.

Even though it is considered to be just a scandal that will later fade into the history books, it should really begin to be taken more seriously. These are only a few benefits and cons of same-sex marriage. However, the benefits or cons should not even be mentioned, because there should not be this much discrimination towards this matter. Homosexuals are not asking for better rights than the rest of the country or their own, they are asking for equality. For a country with a high divorce rate, and business related marriages, protecting the sanctity and the definition a marriage is truly humorous.

Again, this is not about religion or politics or about being gay or straight it is simply about, love. With all the animosity in this nation today, it should not be difficult to reach out for the one love that is fighting to live on. There is no question about it; same-sex marriage would only benefit the United States, because America grows on equality and unity. If the same-sex marriage controversy is doing anything to this nation, it is simply reminding the nation that love can still exist with all the hate in world. Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals are not trying to deny anyone's rights, all they want is theirs. Just as any other person has in this country, they want the right to be able to marry. They want the same feeling of happiness and over joy the rest of the world is allowed to receive. All they want is to be to able to say "I do", but this closed minded country still says "You can't".
