And so I begin..
I left work today after a very slow shift, and went to lunch at my usual spot...BK.
Everything was as usual, and than as I was walking to the trash can to throw out the rest of my food (I know, surprising that I didn't finish it), A homeless man blocked my way and asked if he could have the rest.
I told him yes, and than went on my way back to my apt.
As I went through the mall entrance, however, I stopped and realized that giving that man the rest of my meal, as happy and grateful as he was, wasn't enough. Not only was it not enough, he deserved more for simply being so polite.
I wanted to make sure that he was receiving a full meal, and as small as it was, I gave him 5 dollars to use however he wishes.
The utter gratitute that came from both his words and expressions was all I needed to realize that, for not making much money that day, and having PLENTY of my own financial troubles to sort out, it was worth every penny.
I suddenly went back to the days when I was volunteering at homeless centers around the Boston area, and realized that this is still a problem; that homelessness has NOT gone away.
Living in Santa Monica, you become desensitized due to the overwhelming amount of the homeless population throughout the area. That is not an excuse to ignore it.
I certainly don't give my money to every individual that asks, but I want to ask of all of you, the next time you get that feeling...just go with it.
Trust me, it feels even better just to know that you've made someones day.
And also, the new Tiesto song "In the dark" is pretty much the most amazing song in, oh, the world.
