LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – It is with a heavy heart that The Leon Hendrix Mysterience
extends it's condolences to the family and friends of Mitch Mitchell, the last surviving member of the
famous Jimi Hendrix power trio that took the music world by storm in the 1960's. Mitch had just
finished a successful yet tough tour playing Jimi's music. Sadly, he was discovered having passed away
in his Portland, OR hotel room. It seems he had given his all. This is a tough time for us. November 27th
(Thanksgiving Day) is Jimi's Birthday (66) and we were looking forward to celebrating and maybe
even seeing Mitch sit in on one of our upcoming Jimi Birthday Shows. Bittersweet timing.

Jimi Hendrix' brother Leon Hendrix was notably somber upon hearing of Mitch's passing. Asked about
the loss, Leon went on to say, "I first met Mitch when I went on tour with Jimi, Noel and him in the mid
60's. I grew to love those guys. They were funny and great musicians and brought a lot of love into our
lives. It's hard to believe he's gone, too. I guess Jimi needed his other drummer. Between Buddy Miles
and Mitch Mitchell, the skies will be filled with a glorious thunder. Heaven has one hell of a band now!

I will make sure to give Mitch proper accolades and tributes at the two upcoming Jimi Birthday Jams
I'm playing, the first at B.B. King's (BBKingBlues.com) in NYC on the 28th and the other at Club
Broadway (RockTheBlues.com) in Everett, WA on the 29th. Rock on Mitch... Say hi to Jimi!"

Honored to be able to leave a comment here on Leon Hendrix's page concerning his giving the one and only Mitch Mitchell proper accolades and condolences to the family and friends of Mitch Mitchell.

Mitch was the best, Leon you are the best and we other musicians have big footsteps to follow that is for sure.

Yes he was one of a kind and where would have Jimi had been without Mitch' drumming... I got to meet Mitch at the Queen Mary Jazz Festival in Long Beach Ca. 1985 He was there to see Jack DeJohnette the drummer new jazz band. Mitch was always into Jacks playing.. When I met him he was just walking around with his lady friend after I saw him i knew it was him and he sat down in the back during Steps Aheads set. I asked if he were Mitch he said actually my name is John.. I introduced myself and told him that I had been jamming with Buddy Miles, he asked how he was doing. He then asked me who I came to see I said Miles Davis, he said I like your style...I then got to meet Mitch at the last Hendrix Tribute Concert in San Diego Ca. 2003 I was a guest of Buddy Miles I performed with the Band Of Gypsys the year before there we did All Along The Watchtower. I had met Leon in Los Angeles with Buddy at the House Of Blues a few years ago I was Buddy's guest there as well. One thing I noticed about Mitch was he seemed very paranoid backstage. Always moving his water from place to place as well as his stick bag. I was right with him with Stephen Stills and Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton in San Diego Ca. He would for a moment take out his sticks and play on the speaker cabs while the bands were playing and I could hear his playing while the bands were playing loud. Someone came by with some pick beads and Mitch ask if he could wear them.. He did with his pink pants...I felt a vibe from him that he was always looking over his shoulder I didn't even ask him for his autograph cuz I thought it wouldn't be right you know...Cuz it looked like he was really tripping about being in public. I stond right next to him the entire gig as he went on and off stage Janie was on the side of the stage we were in the back behind a wall of speaker cabs...There was actually a few couches back there too. But Mitch never sat down, I made it a point to stay close to him, Buddy knew I was hanging with him but it didn't seem to bother him he knew it may be my only time to ever see Mitch. I also met Mitch in Seattle 1995 at the Bumper Shoot concert for Jimi that had Randy Hansen and John McLaughlin. I got to meet Al Hendrix that night , your dad Leon. He was just so happy that everyone was there they had a large chair on stage like a kings chair unreal! I didn't see you there Leon.. I helpped Buddy off the stage that night he was having really bad breathing problems and nobody helpped him.. Janie gave Buddy drum sticks taht had diamonds in them. Unreal for his birthday! Buddy let me hold those....The hendrix family has always been close to my heart I can't tell ya why but then again is it love or just confusion...Don't look now but look at the sky turn a hell fire red..Somebodys house is burning down down down down...Ray Spitzer Long Beach Ca.

It is sad, and I remember the day I heard about this. Mitch was phenomenal...the Experience couldn't have come to be without his great drumming. I love the way Jimi and Mitch would play with the rhythm...so good together.
