Music, for the most part, does not exist well in a vacuum. It's better when other people get their dirty, sticky hands all over it. When creating a score, I believe the sound should relate in some way to the action, otherwise it would be hard to call it a collaboration. Sometimes, accidentally, breathtaking moments of beauty can be the momentary result of the clash, but more often, a series of random squawks and bleeps that have nothing to do with what they're watching, wear the listener down and make him feel foolish for even expecting a fleeting moment of intention. This alienation, this refusal to connect is a reason why people say they don't understand modern dance. Now audiences are so worn down by this post-everything, nihilistic cultural landscape, that they will accept the increasingly incoherent work of a critically anointed artist. These artists are allowed to continue perpetrating subpar art fraud because of great work they may have done decades ago. They receive a free pass for life to waste the time and money of institutions and audiences alike, stifling exciting new work, sucking up funding that should go to someone with a pulse.
